Sourcing from Europe's industrial heartland

Lombardy, with Milan at its centre, is one of the most industrialised regions in Europe. Metalworking districts around Brescia and Bergamo, silk and technical fabrics near Como, furniture and lighting from Brianza, food producers in the Po plain – all of them ship to customers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. We arrange this traffic as a freight forwarder using vetted contract carriers, and handle planning, booking and communication with your Italian supplier.

Crossing the Alps

The road distance from Prague to Milan is approximately 880 km. The shortest route runs via Plzeň and Rozvadov into Bavaria, past Munich and Kufstein into Tyrol, over the Brenner Pass and on via Verona along the A4 to Milan. The alternative goes via České Budějovice, Linz and the Tauern tunnel to Villach and Udine – longer, but free of the Tyrolean restrictions.

Which pass is better depends on the cargo and the day. Tyrol enforces a night-time ban on heavy trucks, sectoral bans for certain goods such as stone, timber and steel, and block dosing of trucks at Kufstein on busy days. Austria bans heavy goods vehicles from Saturday afternoon to Sunday night, Germany on Sundays, and Italy on Sundays and public holidays, with additional days in summer.

What Czech buyers import from Milan and Lombardy

  • Machine components, valves, pumps and hydraulics from the Brescia and Bergamo districts.
  • Fabrics, silk, clothing and footwear from Como and Milan distribution warehouses.
  • Furniture and lighting – bulky, delicate goods that need careful stowage.
  • Food: hard cheeses, cured meats, rice from Lomellina, pasta and coffee.
  • Wine from Franciacorta, Oltrepò Pavese and neighbouring Piedmont.
  • Cosmetics, chemicals and plastics.

In the other direction, car parts, glass, steel, paper and sawn timber travel from Czechia to Italy, so carriers run the lane regularly and look for return loads.

Loading in northern Italy

The big distribution centres sit outside Milan itself, around Piacenza, Lodi, Novara and Bergamo, close to the A1 and A4 motorways. They load at docks against confirmed bookings; an unbooked truck may wait until the next day. Milan's low-emission zones admit only newer vehicles, so for city addresses we select a truck with a suitable emission class. Furniture and lighting from smaller workshops in Brianza are often collected from two or three addresses; each needs its own contact and a confirmed time, otherwise the whole run can slip by a day.

Wine is an excise product. Depending on whether your supplier ships under duty suspension or duty-paid, it travels with an electronic administrative document (e-AD) or a simplified accompanying document – check this before collection, as the truck cannot load without it. Remember also that many Italian factories close for two to three weeks around 15 August.

Before you book

Ask the supplier for the warehouse address, loading reference, pallet count, dimensions, weight and whether goods can be stacked. Book collection at least a day in advance, and a week ahead in August and December. For regular full loads see our truck transport service; general information is on the Italy transport page, and the calculator gives you an indicative price.
