Freight forwarding České Budějovice – road transport, import, export
Road freight for České Budějovice: beer, carp, stationery and car electronics out, materials in. D3 via Dolní Dvořiště to Linz, plus Vienna and Prague.
An old trade route to Linz
Trade between České Budějovice and Linz goes back a long way: in 1832 a horse-drawn railway opened between the two towns, one of the first public railways on the European continent, carrying mainly salt and timber. Today the same corridor is served by road. The D3 motorway runs south from Budějovice towards Kaplice and the Dolní Dvořiště/Wullowitz crossing, from where the road continues via Freistadt to Linz, roughly 125 km in total. A truck can load in the morning and deliver in Upper Austria the same day.
Northbound, Prague is about 150 km away. The D3 is complete from Mezno via Tábor to beyond Budějovice, but the stretch between Prague and Mezno is still the I/3 trunk road through Benešov and Votice, which can be slow at rush hour and on weekends.
Border options from South Bohemia
- Dolní Dvořiště/Wullowitz: Linz, Salzburg and the A1 and A7 motorways.
- České Velenice/Gmünd: Lower Austria and Vienna, about 200 km from Budějovice.
- Strážný/Philippsreut: Passau and Lower Bavaria, across the Bohemian Forest, snowy in winter.
- Rozvadov/Waidhaus on the D5: Nuremberg and the Rhineland, via Plzeň.
From Linz, the motorway continues to Salzburg and across the Tauern towards Italy and Slovenia, which makes South Bohemia a natural starting point for southbound freight. See also our pages on transport to Austria and freight forwarding Linz.
Around Budějovice
About 25 km north of the city, near Týn nad Vltavou, stands the Temelín nuclear power plant. During outages and upgrades it draws in equipment, piping, cables and building materials, often to tight deadlines and with strict gate controls. Strakonice has a tradition of engineering and textiles, and Tábor and Písek are further industrial towns in the region. For South Bohemian firms, southbound exports are faster than domestic runs, while imports from Germany usually arrive via Prague or via Plzeň and the D5.
Beer, carp, pencils and car electronics
Budějovice beer is an EU protected geographical indication and has been brewed in the town since the Middle Ages, which generates full loads of bottles, cans and kegs plus return runs of empties and pallets. The Třeboň basin is the largest fish-farming area in the country, and much of the autumn and pre-Christmas carp harvest is sold to Germany, Austria and beyond. Pencils, crayons and stationery have been made in the city since the mid-19th century; today, automotive electronics, sensors and metal castings are the larger industries. The region also supplies sawn timber from the Bohemian Forest and dairy products. Inbound flows consist of electronic components, metals, plastics, animal feed, packaging and consumer goods.
Matching the vehicle to the cargo
Chilled fish and dairy travel in refrigerated trucks with a temperature log; live fish require specialist tank vehicles with oxygen supply. Beer usually moves by the full truckload, protected from frost in winter. Car parts run on scheduled lines with fixed slots, backed by express vans when needed, while stationery and small retail goods suit groupage pallets. Sawmills often lack a dock, so we book curtain-siders that can be loaded from the side.
Driving through Austria
Most loads from Budějovice cross Austria, where heavy trucks may not run from Saturday afternoon to Sunday night or on public holidays. At night only low-noise trucks are allowed, at reduced speed. Motorway tolls are distance-based. As Austria is in the EU, an invoice and CMR note are enough, plus a temperature record for chilled goods. Book reefers early during the carp harvest and before Christmas, when demand peaks. For an indicative price, use our calculator; we usually reply with a quote within 30 minutes on weekdays.
