Steel, chemicals and food from Lesser Poland

Behind Kraków's image as a university and tourist city sits a solid industrial base. The Nowa Huta district still houses the post-war steelworks that produces rolled steel. Chemical plants around Oświęcim to the west and Tarnów to the east make plastics, fertilisers and nitrogen compounds. The region is also known for cured meats, dairy, bakery products and confectionery. Upper Silesia around Katowice and Gliwice, directly on the road to Czechia, adds car production, automotive parts, machinery and steel structures.

Typical loads we bring into the Czech Republic:

  • steel sheets, profiles and fabricated structures
  • plastic granulates, fertilisers and chemical raw materials, partly under ADR
  • sausages, cheese, confectionery and bakery goods
  • furniture, timber products and building materials
  • automotive components from Silesian plants

Czech exports to Kraków include engineering products, glass, beer, paper and construction materials, which makes return loads easy to combine.

Route options and distances

The main route follows the A4 motorway past Katowice and the A1 to the Gorzyczki – Bohumín border crossing, then the D1 into Moravia. The A4 between Katowice and Kraków is a separately tolled section; other motorways and expressways use an electronic toll for vehicles over 3.5 t. A shorter but slower option runs via Bielsko-Biała and the Cieszyn – Český Těšín crossing on busy roads through towns.

Approximate road distances from Kraków: Ostrava 170 km, Olomouc 260 km, Brno 330 km, Prague 540 km. A full truck reaches Ostrava or Olomouc the same day and Prague within one to two working days; pallet groupage takes two to three working days. Details of the shortest lane are on the Ostrava – Kraków page.

Delivering in Kraków

The historic Old Town is a UNESCO site with restricted vehicle access. Shops, hotels and restaurants there are supplied in early-morning windows, usually by vans or small trucks, so we do not send full trailers into the centre. Warehouses and factories are mostly on the outskirts and along the A4, with good truck access and loading docks. For any collection please confirm the address, opening hours, dock availability, pallet count and dimensions, and weight.

Pallet exchange is another point worth settling in advance. Many Polish warehouses expect the driver to hand over as many empty Euro pallets as he takes full ones; if no exchange applies, state it in the order so the truck is not held up at the gate. Smaller suppliers may only have a hand pallet truck, so let us know who loads. We also time departures to avoid the rush hours on the A4 around Katowice, where queues are common in the morning and late afternoon.

Polish holidays and driving bans

Trucks over 12 t may not drive during the day on Polish public holidays, and extra bans apply on Friday evenings, Saturday mornings and Sundays during the summer school holidays. Several Polish holidays, such as 3 May, Corpus Christi, 15 August and 11 November, are not holidays in Czechia, so warehouses on the Polish side are closed while Czech ones work. We plan collections around these dates.

Picking the right service

Steel is usually shipped as a full load, sometimes loaded from the side or from above, so tell us how the goods will be loaded. Meat and dairy need a reefer with temperature logging. Palletised granulates and building materials suit full truck transport, while smaller lots of furniture or cosmetics travel in groupage. Hazardous chemicals go only with ADR-equipped carriers. Paperwork within the EU is a CMR note and an invoice or delivery note, plus ADR documents where needed. Use the calculator for a price.
