Freight forwarding Magdeburg – transport to and from Czechia
Magdeburg lies about 350 km from Prague. Grain, sugar, fertiliser, steel and machine parts from the Elbe port and the Börde moved to Czechia by pallet or truck.
Where the canal crosses the river
Just north of the city the Mittelland Canal is carried over the Elbe on a trough bridge 918 metres long, opened in 2003 and one of the longest navigable aqueducts in the world. This waterway junction links the Elbe westward to the Ruhr and eastward to Berlin. The port of Magdeburg is the second largest on the Elbe after Hamburg and the biggest inland port in eastern Germany, handling fertilisers, chemicals, petroleum products, iron and steel, ores, food and animal feed.
When goods for a Czech buyer arrive here by barge or rail, we send a truck to the port warehouse. Tell us the terminal, the shipment reference and whether the cargo is loose, bagged or palletised, so we can choose between a tipper, a curtain-sider or a standard trailer.
Same river, different choice
The Elbe flows on to Mělník, Ústí nad Labem and Děčín in Bohemia, so shipping by water may seem logical. In practice almost everything between Magdeburg and the Czech Republic travels by road, because the upper Elbe regularly suffers low water in dry months and vessels cannot sail fully loaded or at all. For delivery on a fixed date, the truck wins.
The road distance from Prague is about 350 km: D8 to Dresden, A4 to Nossen, then the A14 past Leipzig and Halle. That is a single driving day, with same-evening or next-morning delivery depending on loading time. From Brno, plan on about 550 km and next-working-day arrival.
Black soil of the Börde
West of the city lies the Magdeburg Börde, Germany's most fertile farmland. The national reference point for rating soil quality is located here, near the village of Eickendorf. Wheat, barley and sugar beet dominate, supporting flour mills, maltings and sugar production. South of Magdeburg, around Staßfurt, potash mining began in the nineteenth century, laying the foundation of the German fertiliser industry. Loads we typically bring to Czechia include:
- grain, malt and flour in bags or bulk,
- sugar on pallets or in big bags,
- potash and other mineral fertilisers,
- welded steel structures and parts from local engineering works,
- consumer goods from large distribution centres along the A2 and A14.
Czech exporters send building materials, glass, ceramics, metal products and beverages the other way.
Food-grade, bulk or heavy
Sugar and flour need a clean, dry, odour-free trailer that has not carried chemicals; mention it when ordering. Fertiliser in big bags is loaded by forklift and quickly reaches the legal weight limit, so we need the exact number and weight of bags. Some fertilisers are classified as dangerous goods and travel with an ADR carrier. Steel structures suit a full truckload with side loading; smaller consignments from warehouses go by pallet groupage.
Saxony-Anhalt holidays and access
Saxony-Anhalt is one of only three German states where Epiphany on 6 January is a public holiday, and it also observes Reformation Day on 31 October. On both days, as on Sundays and national holidays, trucks over 7.5 t are not allowed on the road. Toll is due above 3.5 t.
The city sits at the junction of the A2 between Berlin and Hanover and the A14 from Halle. Warehouses and plants cluster in the port and industrial area in the north and along the motorways, so trucks rarely need to enter the centre.
