Where Olomouc fits on the map
Olomouc is the main city of central Moravia, roughly 280 km by motorway from Prague and about 80 km from Brno. The D46 runs south through Prostějov to join the D1 near Vyškov, the D35 heads north-west towards Mohelnice and east to meet the D1 near Lipník nad Bečvou, which continues to Ostrava and the Polish border. That makes the city a practical base for distribution in Moravia and for loads heading to Poland, Slovakia, Austria and Germany.
The city also lies on the main Prague–Ostrava railway, with Přerov nearby as one of Moravia's key rail junctions. For pallets and part loads, though, road transport remains the most flexible option.
What the region makes and buys
The fertile Haná plain is known for malting barley, malt and sugar beet, and the area processes dairy products, bakery goods and its own traditional ripened cheese. Industry around Olomouc, Prostějov, Přerov and Šternberk produces machinery and machine parts, electrical equipment, metal structures and building materials. Prostějov has a long tradition in clothing, Přerov in engineering and optics, and the Jeseník area further north in stone and timber.
Goods typically leaving the region:
- machines, components and steel structures,
- malt, food products and confectionery,
- garments and textiles,
- stone and building elements.
Coming in are steel and semi-finished metal, plastic granulate, electronic components, packaging, fresh fruit and vegetables, furniture and consumer goods – much of it from Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the Netherlands.
Main corridors and transit times
Poland is reached via the D1 and the Věřňovice/Gorzyczki crossing onto the Polish A1; Silesia and Kraków are within one day. For Germany, trucks usually go via Prague and the D5 to Bavaria or the D8 to Saxony – Nuremberg is about 550–600 km away and delivery is normally the next working day. Vienna is around 220 km away via Brno and the Mikulov/Drasenhofen crossing. See also our page on transport to Poland.
Czech motorways charge an electronic toll for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, and trucks over 7.5 tonnes may not drive on Sunday and public holiday afternoons, with extra summer restrictions on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. We build these rules into the loading plan.
Loading in Olomouc
Most factories and warehouses sit on the outskirts near motorway junctions, with docks and easy access for articulated trucks. The historic centre is different: narrow streets and restricted access mean a van or small rigid truck and delivery within the permitted supply hours. If the receiver has no dock or forklift, we book a vehicle with a tail lift. The spring and summer Flora horticultural shows at the exhibition grounds call for tightly timed deliveries of plants and stands – book early and confirm the unloading slot.
Food plants in the Haná region tend to dispatch early in the day, so check the supplier's loading hours and whether they want the truck's registration number in advance. A confirmed slot avoids waiting time for the driver and the extra charges that come with it.
Choosing the right service
A few pallets travel best as groupage, a full trailer or long material as a dedicated truck, and an urgent spare part by express van straight to the line. Chilled food and pharmaceuticals go with temperature-controlled carriers, dangerous goods with ADR-certified partners. Within the EU you need only a CMR consignment note and an invoice or delivery note.
