How space on the vehicle is calculated
With groupage and part loads you pay not for the whole vehicle but for the space your goods take. The basic unit is the loading metre – one metre of deck length across the full trailer width. Because a trailer is about 2.4 metres wide, roughly two and a half Euro pallets placed crosswise fit into one loading metre, so a single non-stackable Euro pallet equals about 0.4 loading metres.
Weight matters too. Light, bulky goods are charged by space, heavy goods by weight. Carriers apply a conversion that compares both values and charge whichever is higher.
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pallet size (Euro, industrial, non-standard) | An industrial 120 × 100 cm pallet takes more space than a Euro pallet |
| Height including goods | Decides whether anything can go on top |
| Weight of each pallet | Heavy pallets are not stacked and may set the price |
| Stackability | A stackable pallet may use only half the floor space |
Stackability changes the price
If another pallet can safely sit on yours, the carrier uses the vehicle height and your shipment occupies less floor. For goods that cannot be stacked – fragile items, irregular shapes, drums, pointed loads – say so in advance. The carrier will mark the pallet and keep it clear. If this information is missing, re-measurement at the depot can make the shipment more expensive than expected.
Packing and labelling pallets
Groupage freight is handled several times on its way, so packaging must withstand more than on a direct run. What works:
- a sound pallet with no cracked boards and goods that do not overhang its edges,
- tight stretch wrapping that includes the pallet itself, not just the goods,
- edge protectors and strapping for heavy or unstable loads,
- a label on at least two sides with consignee address, piece count and shipment reference,
- clear "Do not stack" or "Fragile" marking where needed,
- numbering such as 1/3, 2/3, 3/3 for multi-pallet shipments so none is separated at the depot.
Transhipment and transit times
Groupage runs through a depot network: the pallet is collected, transferred at a hub onto a trunk vehicle to the destination region, and delivered there by a local vehicle. Each transfer adds time, so transit is usually one to two working days longer than a direct run over the same distance. The upside is shared space – you pay only for your share.
A part load sits in between: your goods travel with other shipments but without depot handling, which suits larger volumes of several loading metres. When a shipment approaches half a trailer, compare it with a full truckload.
Consolidating pallets from several EU suppliers
If you buy from several suppliers abroad – say in Germany, Austria and northern Italy – each shipment does not have to travel separately. We arrange collection from each supplier and combine them into one movement to Czechia, either by one vehicle collecting along the route or via a depot where pallets are merged. You receive one delivery with one unloading slot instead of several.
For consolidation to work we need each supplier's address, opening hours, pallet count and size, weight and order reference. Indicative prices for individual and combined shipments are in the calculator.
