Dresden – street in the city centre

A motorway junction on the Elbe

Dresden sits in the Elbe valley roughly 150 km from Prague and about 360 km from Brno. The A17, which continues the Czech D8 motorway beyond the Krásný Les / Breitenau border crossing, ends at the A4 south-west of the city. The A4 runs east past Bautzen and Görlitz to the Polish border and west to Chemnitz, the A13 to Berlin starts on the northern edge of town, and Leipzig is reached via the A4 and A14. In practice this means Dresden is where Czech consignments for Berlin, eastern Germany and Poland split up, and where loads from Saxony and Lusatia come together on their way south.

The city has an Elbe river port with a rail connection in the Friedrichstadt district. River traffic to Hamburg, however, depends on water levels and often pauses in dry summers, so most goods between Dresden and Czechia travel by road.

What Dresden makes and ships to Czechia

Dresden is the core of the Saxon semiconductor cluster, with new chip plants under construction and existing ones expanding. The city also produces vaccines and pharmaceuticals, medical and laboratory technology, and aircraft components, including the conversion of passenger aircraft to freighters. Its technical university is one of the largest in Germany and is surrounded by research institutes. Typical import shipments we handle from Dresden:

  • pharmaceuticals and vaccines that must stay at 2–8 °C,
  • laboratory instruments, analysers and cleanroom equipment,
  • electronic components and modules in anti-static packaging,
  • composite and cabin parts for aircraft: bulky, light and easily scratched,
  • Christmas stollen and other bakery products for Czech retailers in late autumn.

Czech materials for Dresden construction sites

Fab construction and the infrastructure around it draw on materials manufactured just across the border. We arrange transport of steel structures, reinforcement, precast concrete, cables, ventilation ducts, scaffolding and construction chemicals to Dresden. Large industrial sites have their own rules: the vehicle is booked in advance for a specific gate and time, drivers need ID and often a safety briefing, and unloading is done by crane or forklift from the side. For these jobs we use trailers with a sliding roof or curtain so that loading from the top and side is possible. Food, beverages, furniture, glass and exhibition stands for the Dresden fairground are other regular loads heading into the city.

Deliveries inside the city

Dresden restricts heavy trucks passing through the city, but deliveries to addresses in the city are possible – we check the current rules before every job. Drivers therefore go straight to the delivery point instead of cutting through residential areas. The historic old town has pedestrian zones that accept deliveries only in the morning. Only a handful of bridges cross the Elbe, and since part of the Carola Bridge collapsed in September 2024 the centre has one crossing fewer, which adds time at peak hours. For shops, labs and offices in the centre, a vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes or a van with a tail lift works better than an articulated truck; industrial areas near the airport and on the outskirts take full trucks without difficulty.

Choosing the right service

  • Pallet groupage for regular store or workshop deliveries, see pallet transport.
  • Express van for an instrument or spare part, in Dresden within hours of leaving Prague.
  • Refrigerated truck with a temperature log for pharmaceuticals.
  • Full truck with sliding roof for steel and construction materials.

Details of the road itself, the border crossing and Saxony's extra public holidays are covered on the Prague – Dresden route page.

Paperwork and preparation

No customs formalities apply between Czechia and Germany: a CMR consignment note plus an invoice or delivery note is enough. Pharmaceuticals travel with a temperature record, and for construction materials a delivery note with the project number and the site manager's name helps the handover. Trucks over 7.5 tonnes may not drive in Germany on Sundays and public holidays; German and Czech tolls are included in our price.

Before booking, please confirm the exact address and entrance, receiving hours, whether a dock or crane is available, the number and size of pallets and the weight. Get a quote in the price calculator; our dispatch replies Monday to Friday, 8:00–18:00.
