Paris – river and waterfront

Distribution hub of France

Many goods collected in the Paris area were not made there at all. The ring of warehouses around the French capital serves as the national distribution base for consumer goods, cosmetics, books, spare parts and food, so a supplier's "Paris" pickup can mean a warehouse 40 km from the city centre. The main clusters lie north near Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport and along the A1, south along the A5 and A6 motorways, and around the wholesale food market at Rungis. The river port of Gennevilliers on the Seine handles containers and bulk cargo shipped upriver from the coast.

The region itself is strong in cosmetics and perfume, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, instruments and electronics, printing and publishing, and food processing. Typical imports from Paris to the Czech Republic and Slovakia include:

  • cosmetics, fragrances and toiletries,
  • wine and champagne from the neighbouring Champagne region, cheese and fine foods,
  • pharmaceuticals and medical supplies,
  • aerospace and automotive spare parts, measuring instruments,
  • fashion, textiles and accessories, books and printed matter.

In the other direction, Czech suppliers send car components, machinery, glass and glass packaging, furniture, building materials and beer to the Paris region.

Route and transit time

The usual route runs from Prague on the D5 to the Rozvadov/Waidhaus border crossing, along the German A6 via Nuremberg, Heilbronn and Mannheim to Saarbrücken, then on the French A4 past Metz and Reims into Paris – roughly 1,050 km. A single driver covers about 600–700 km per day under EU driving-time rules, so a full truck loaded in Paris in the morning normally reaches Prague on the second working day. French motorways charge tolls at toll plazas and Germany levies a distance-based truck toll; both are included in the quote from our freight calculator.

Driving bans in France and Germany

Trucks over 7.5 t may not drive in France from Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00, nor from 22:00 on the eve of a public holiday until 22:00 on the holiday itself, with additional Saturday restrictions in summer. Germany bans trucks on Sundays and public holidays and, in July and August, on Saturdays on selected motorways. A Friday afternoon pickup in Paris is therefore often delivered on Tuesday.

Getting into the city

Inside the Boulevard Périphérique, large trucks face access hours, size limits and tightening emission rules. For deliveries to shops, offices or venues in central Paris we use a smaller vehicle with a tail lift or a transfer on the city edge, and we check the current access rules before each job. Warehouses outside the city work with booked time slots; arriving late usually means waiting for the next free slot, sometimes the next day.

Choosing the service

OptionBest forTypical transit
Full truck (FTL)beverages, building materials, packaging2 working days
Pallet groupagecosmetics, books, spare parts in small lots4–6 working days
Express vanurgent parts for production or serviceusually next day
Reeferwine, cheese, temperature-controlled pharma2 working days

Perfumes and some aerosol cosmetics may be dangerous goods; we book them with ADR-certified carriers. More on the country as a whole is on our France transport page.

Before you book

Ask your supplier to confirm the exact warehouse address including gate number, the booked slot and pickup reference, the number and size of pallets and the gross weight. Many French warehouses refuse to load without a reference number. Paperwork is simple within the EU: a CMR consignment note plus invoice or delivery note, and a temperature record for chilled food. No customs declaration is needed.
