Gateway to Saxony

Ústí nad Labem sits in the Elbe valley between the Central Bohemian Uplands and the Ore Mountains, on the shortest road link between Prague and Dresden. The D8 motorway reaches the city about 90 km from Prague and then climbs over the Ore Mountains to the Krásný Les/Breitenau crossing, where it becomes the German A17. Dresden is only about 75 km away. Completion of the D8 was delayed for several years by a landslide near Dobkovičky in 2013; since 2016 the motorway has been open along its full length.

The ridge section runs at around 700 metres above sea level, and in winter fog, black ice and snow are common. For time-critical loads we build in a buffer and monitor traffic reports from the mountain stretch.

The Elbe: a real waterway

Ústí is one of the few Czech cities where inland shipping genuinely matters. The Elbe is navigable from here to Hamburg, with ports and transhipment facilities in Ústí, Děčín and Lovosice. The Střekov lock in Ústí is the last lock on the Czech stretch; downstream the river flows freely, so barges depend on water levels and often cannot sail fully loaded in dry summers and autumns. Waterborne freight is therefore mostly heavy machinery, bulk cargo and containers. For ordinary pallets, road is faster and more reliable, and if your cargo continues by water, we arrange the truck leg to or from the port.

Industry of the Ústí region

• Chemicals: produced in Ústí since the mid-19th century, today mainly epoxy resins, chlorine and caustic soda.
• Fertilisers: manufactured in Lovosice.
• Plastics: the petrochemical complex near Litvínov produces granulates such as polyethylene and polypropylene.
• Glass: flat glass from the Teplice area.
• Energy: lignite mining and power generation around Most.
• Agriculture: hops from the Žatec area and fruit from orchards around Litoměřice.

Imports into the region include chemical raw materials, machinery and spare parts, packaging and consumer goods from warehouses in Saxony and northern Germany. Most chemicals are dangerous goods, which we arrange as ADR transport.

Hops and fruit in season

Žatec hops are shipped to breweries all over Europe. Pressed bales and pellets must stay dry and away from heat, with volumes peaking after the late-summer harvest. Fresh fruit from the Litoměřice orchards needs refrigerated trucks and fast delivery.

Saxony as neighbour, customer and supplier

For companies around Ústí, Saxony is closer than many Czech regions. Car plants around Dresden, Leipzig and Zwickau source parts from suppliers across North Bohemia, including the industrial zone near Žatec, and demand deliveries in precise time slots. In the opposite direction, machinery, spare parts and consumer goods come from distribution centres around Dresden and Leipzig. Because distances are so short, a truck unloading in Saxony can often pick up a return load and be back the same day. For small, urgent cross-border consignments, a van is a good option: it is not covered by the heavy-truck driving bans and reaches Dresden in well under two hours.

Lanes and timing

Dresden, Berlin and Leipzig are same-day destinations. Hamburg and Bremen take one working day, the Rhineland and Benelux one to two. Germany bans heavy trucks on Sundays and public holidays, and on selected motorways also on summer Saturdays, which we factor into every plan. Within the EU, an invoice and CMR note are sufficient.
