Belgian goods heading for Central Europe

Belgium punches well above its size in food, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. From Brussels and its surroundings we most often move the following to the Czech Republic and Slovakia:

  • chocolate, pralines, biscuits and confectionery,
  • Belgian beer in bottles, cans and kegs,
  • pharmaceuticals, vaccines and medical supplies, often temperature-controlled,
  • frozen fries and vegetables,
  • chemicals, plastics and intermediate products via nearby Antwerp,
  • carpets, textiles, steel products and machine parts.

Not everything loaded around Brussels is made there. Frozen fries and vegetables mostly come from West Flanders, beer from breweries all over the country and chemicals from the port of Antwerp; Brussels and its ring road simply make a natural consolidation point. If you import kegged beer, agree the return of empties with your supplier – a truck coming from the Czech Republic can take them back.

Czech companies supply Belgium with car parts, machinery, glass, furniture, paper, building materials and food. For shipments starting in the port of Antwerp itself, see our Prague – Antwerp route.

Where "Brussels" really is

The Brussels-Capital Region is a small territory surrounded by Flanders and Wallonia, so most warehouses described as Brussels lie outside the city: along the R0 ring road, near the airport at Zaventem, around Vilvoorde to the north or along the E40 and E19 motorways. Brussels is officially bilingual and streets carry both French and Dutch names, while neighbouring municipalities use only one language. Ask for the loading address exactly as the warehouse writes it, ideally with GPS coordinates. Inside the city, a canal port linked to the Scheldt and Antwerp handles building materials, oil products and containers, and Brussels Airport has positioned itself as a European hub for pharmaceutical air cargo with certified temperature-controlled facilities.

Route, tolls and the low-emission zone

From Prague the route runs on the D5 via Rozvadov/Waidhaus, through Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Cologne to Aachen, crosses into Belgium at Lichtenbusch/Eynatten and follows the E40 via Liège to Brussels. It is roughly 900 km, normally two working days for a full truck with one driver, and pickups in Brussels combine well with stops in the Rhineland or Frankfurt area.

Germany charges a truck toll and bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays, and on summer Saturdays on selected motorways. Belgium levies a kilometre charge for goods vehicles over 3.5 t on motorways and part of the other roads, paid through an on-board unit managed by the carrier. The whole Brussels-Capital Region is a low-emission zone; vehicles must meet its standards and foreign vehicles sometimes need prior registration, which we take into account when choosing a carrier.

Temperature, ADR and shipment size

In summer, chocolate always travels in a reefer, because it softens and loses its gloss in the heat; pralines are often carried at around 15 to 18 °C. Pharmaceuticals have strict temperature ranges and need carriers who can show an unbroken temperature log. Frozen products travel in frozen mode, and chemicals from the Antwerp area are often ADR dangerous goods. A few pallets of beer or biscuits are best sent by pallet groupage in around 4–6 working days; full loads go direct by full truck with no transhipment.

Checklist before loading

  • exact address in the warehouse's language, ideally with coordinates,
  • time slot and loading reference,
  • number and size of pallets, weight and whether they can be stacked,
  • required temperature for chilled goods and logging requirements for pharma,
  • safety data sheet and UN numbers for dangerous goods.

Belgium is in the EU, so no customs formalities apply: a CMR note plus invoice or delivery note is enough, with a temperature record for food. For deliveries into central Brussels, with narrow streets and time-limited access, we plan a smaller vehicle with a tail lift.
