Freight forwarding Erfurt – transport to and from Czechia
Freight forwarding Erfurt: deliveries to central German distribution warehouses and imports of Thuringian electronics, glass and food to the Czech Republic.
A distribution hub in the middle of Germany
Erfurt is ringed by the A4, the east–west motorway between Dresden and Frankfurt, and the A71, which heads south through the Thuringian Forest towards Schweinfurt and north to the A38. Since reunification, land near these junctions has filled with central warehouses for online retailers, book and consumer-goods distributors, parcel hubs and wholesalers. On the eastern edge of the city a freight village includes a combined-transport terminal where containers and swap bodies move between rail and road.
So if a Czech manufacturer supplies a German web shop or wholesaler, the delivery address is quite often Erfurt rather than Munich or Hamburg. Distribution across Germany starts from there.
Delivering to an Erfurt warehouse
Large fulfilment and distribution sites work strictly with booked slots. From experience, these points decide whether unloading goes smoothly:
- the sender usually books the slot in the warehouse portal; we need the booking number and order reference,
- the receiver expects an exact pallet count and height, and often barcode labels on two sides,
- goods must not overhang the pallet and must be stretch-wrapped, or the load may be refused,
- in the run-up to Christmas slots fill quickly, so plan further ahead.
A few pallets go best as pallet transport; seasonal stock builds justify a dedicated truck.
What Thuringia makes and ships to Czechia
South of the city, at the A4/A71 junction, an industrial zone produces battery cells for electric cars. Erfurt itself has semiconductor and microelectronics manufacturing, nearby Jena is known for optics and precision engineering, and Eisenach assembles passenger cars. Typical loads heading to the Czech Republic:
- electronic components, sensors and optical parts, which need dry, shock-free transport and often go express,
- automotive components,
- Thuringian sausages, including a protected-origin bratwurst, in refrigerated vehicles,
- hand-blown glass Christmas ornaments from the Thuringian Forest and porcelain, best moved without transhipment,
- seeds, young plants and horticultural goods; Erfurt has a long tradition in seed breeding and is nicknamed the city of flowers.
Trade is old news here: in the Middle Ages Erfurt grew rich on woad, a plant used for blue dye, and lay on the Via Regia trade route. Today Czech exporters send consumer goods, drinks, building materials, metal parts and plastics to the city.
Routes and transit times
From Prague, trucks take the D8 to the Krásný Les / Breitenau crossing, then the A17 and A4 past Chemnitz and Jena: approximately 360 km. From Karlovy Vary or Cheb the shorter way crosses at Aš or Pomezí nad Ohří, uses the A93 to Hof and the A9 to the Hermsdorf junction, then the A4, about 270 km in total. Brno is approximately 570 km away. A full truck from Bohemia loads and unloads the same day; from Brno, loading in the afternoon and unloading next morning is realistic. Pallet groupage needs two to three working days. Heading further south, the A71 runs through the Rennsteig tunnel, the longest road tunnel in Germany.
Rules and paperwork
Trucks over 7.5 tonnes may not drive in Germany on Sundays and public holidays, and summer Saturday bans apply on some motorways. Thuringia also keeps Reformation Day as a public holiday, when warehouses are closed. German road toll applies above 3.5 tonnes and is part of our quote. No customs between Czechia and Germany: a CMR and an invoice or delivery note suffice, plus temperature records for chilled food.
