Why Ingolstadt matters to Czech shippers

Ingolstadt sits on the Danube in Upper Bavaria, roughly halfway between Nuremberg and Munich, with the A9 running straight through it. It is also where Czech crude oil supply begins: near Vohburg an der Donau the TAL pipeline, which crosses the Alps from the port of Trieste, connects with the IKL pipeline feeding refineries in Bohemia. Refining around Vohburg and Neustadt an der Donau keeps a steady demand for transport of lubricants, additives, technical fluids and other dangerous goods, which we handle as ADR transport with specialised carriers.

Supplying the car plant

The city's largest employer is passenger car production. Next to the factory, a freight centre and supplier park receive parts that must arrive in the exact sequence of assembly. Czech suppliers send pressings, castings, wiring harnesses, interior plastics, seat components and electronics. What that means in practice:

  • every truck has a booked unloading slot and late arrivals trigger escalation on the customer's side,
  • labels and returnable containers follow the receiver's rules,
  • the return leg usually carries empty packaging back to the Czech supplier,
  • when a line is at risk, a dedicated van with the missing parts leaves within hours.

Regular flows run as full truckloads with a fixed carrier; emergencies go by express van.

Development work and prototypes

Beyond series production, Ingolstadt hosts large development and testing centres, a technical university and many engineering service firms. Czech design offices, toolmakers and test labs therefore send prototype parts, moulds, fixtures and measuring equipment here. These loads are often confidential and valuable, so we use a closed vehicle, a direct run without transhipment and handover to a named person. For moulds, piece weight and securing matter, since a single tool can weigh several tonnes.

Goods coming from the region

Between Ingolstadt, Munich and Landshut lies the Hallertau, the largest continuous hop-growing area in the world. Czech brewers and traders buy hop pellets and extracts there, which need dry, cool, covered transport to keep their aroma. Fittingly, the Bavarian beer purity law was proclaimed in Ingolstadt in 1516. Other typical imports to Czechia include:

  • spare parts, tools and gauges for workshops and assembly lines,
  • oils, lubricants and additives from the refinery cluster,
  • plastic granulate and packaging materials,
  • machinery and fixtures from Bavarian engineering firms,
  • Bavarian beer and food for wholesalers.

Southbound, Czech companies mostly ship automotive components, metal and plastic parts, glass and building materials.

Route and timing

From Prague the usual route is the D5 to Rozvadov / Waidhaus, then the A6 and A93 past Regensburg, finishing on the B16 or via the A9 junction south of the city. The alternative runs through Nuremberg and down the A9. The road distance is approximately 360 km from Prague, 270 km from Plzeň and 560 km from Brno. A full truck from Bohemia arrives the same day; from Moravia it typically unloads the next working morning, which suits early slots. Pallet groupage takes two to three working days.

Rules, documents and unloading tips

Germany bans trucks over 7.5 tonnes on Sundays and public holidays, plus summer Saturdays on selected motorways. Bavaria observes some holidays that other states do not, and warehouses close on those days too. The German truck toll applies above 3.5 tonnes and is included in our quote. Within the EU a CMR and an invoice or delivery note are enough; dangerous goods also need ADR paperwork. Before booking, confirm the slot number, the gate or hall, the packaging type and whether a dock is available. A first estimate comes from our calculator.
