The Rhine port is where most cargo starts

Measured by cargo handled from ships, the Rhine port of Karlsruhe is the largest in Baden-Württemberg. It has two parts: a general port for bulk, containers and break-bulk, and an oil port that accounts for more than half of the volume. Germany's largest oil refinery stands next to it, which explains the many warehouses for chemicals, lubricants, bitumen and building materials in the port area. A paper mill operates on the Rhine at Maxau.

A typical import job for a Czech customer starts with goods that arrived by barge from Rotterdam or Antwerp and are transferred to a truck in Karlsruhe. For container pick-ups we need the container number, the terminal contact and whether the box travels as it is or is unpacked onto pallets first.

Goods that travel from the Karlsruhe area to Czechia

  • packaged chemicals, oils, lubricants and bitumen products, often shipped under ADR rules,
  • paper on reels and pallets for printers and packaging makers,
  • electronics, measuring and control equipment from the city's technology firms,
  • truck components – across the Rhine in Wörth stands one of the world's largest truck assembly plants, surrounded by suppliers,
  • jewellery, watches and precision parts from nearby Pforzheim, a traditional goldsmithing centre,
  • seasonal asparagus from the Bruchsal area and wines from Baden and the Palatinate.

Czech suppliers in turn send automotive components, metal products, building materials and food for wholesalers to the region.

A planned city of courts and engineers

Karlsruhe was only founded in 1715 as the residence of the margraves of Baden. Its streets radiate from the palace like the ribs of a fan. Today it is home to Germany's two highest federal courts, a major technology institute and a strong IT sector. Inner-city streets are narrow, partly pedestrianised and open to deliveries only in set hours, but most loading sites we serve are in the industrial areas by the Rhine on the western side of the city. The city abolished its low-emission zone in 2023, so no emissions sticker is needed.

Route, bridge and transit time

The distance from Prague is about 560 km. Trucks take the D5 to Rozvadov, then the A6 past Nuremberg and Heilbronn to the Walldorf interchange and the A5 south. The alternative via Stuttgart and the A8 is often congested around Pforzheim. Delivery to Prague is usually on the morning after collection; Brno, about 780 km away, takes two working days.

Loading points across the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate are reached via the Maxau bridge, the only road bridge near the city. It is a known bottleneck at rush hour and during repairs, so please allow some slack in the time window.

Practical points

Single pallets of chemicals, electronics or parts are best sent by pallet groupage; paper and building materials usually justify a full truck. Asparagus has a short season from roughly April to the end of June and must travel refrigerated without transhipment. High-value goods from Pforzheim need a closed vehicle and the declared value for insurance. Port warehouses require pre-booked slots.

Trucks over 7.5 tonnes may not drive on Sundays and public holidays; Baden-Württemberg also observes Epiphany, Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day. In summer a Saturday ban applies on selected motorways, including the A5 and A6. For a price indication, use our online calculator.

When you send an enquiry, tell us whether the goods are loaded at a dock, from the side or from the rear by forklift, and for paper reels whether they stand or lie. If part of the load continues to Slovakia, we can plan a combined drop in Moravia on the way.
