Munich at a glance for shippers

Munich is the economic capital of Bavaria and part of one of Europe's strongest industrial regions. For Czech and Slovak buyers it is a source of high-value manufactured goods, and for Czech suppliers it is one of the most important customer regions in Germany. Trade runs heavily in both directions, which keeps vehicles available on this corridor.

Products from Upper Bavaria

  • cars and car parts, made in Munich itself and in Ingolstadt to the north, plus a dense supplier network,
  • aerospace, electronics, measuring and medical technology, optics,
  • chemicals from the Bavarian chemical triangle around Burghausen in the east: plastics, silicones, industrial gases and basic chemicals,
  • machinery, construction equipment, electric motors and drives,
  • beer, dairy products and cheese, and hops from the Hallertau, the world's largest continuous hop-growing area, along the A9 north of the city.

Czech exports to Munich include automotive and machine components, castings and forgings, plastic and metal parts, glass, building materials and food.

The road network around the city

The A99 orbital links the A9 from Nuremberg, the A92 from Deggendorf, the A94 from Passau, the A8 from Salzburg and the A96 from Lindau. Warehouses cluster along these spokes, with much of the logistics activity to the north and north-east towards the airport, which also handles air cargo. A large combined transport terminal in the east of the city moves containers and trailers by rail. Munich is also a natural consolidation point for goods coming north from Italy over the Brenner Pass.

Border crossings and transit times

Prague to Munich is approximately 380 km. Trucks usually take the D5 through the Rozvadov / Waidhaus crossing, then the A6, A93 via Regensburg and the A9. The Folmava / Furth im Wald crossing via Plzeň is shorter but slower and suits loads from south-west Bohemia; from South Bohemia, Strážný / Philippsreut and Passau can be quicker. Brno is approximately 560–600 km away, either via Prague or through Austria, where Austrian tolls apply. A full truck covers both distances in one working day; groupage pallets take one to two days. More on the Prague–Munich route page.

Bavarian holidays and city access

Bavaria has more public holidays than most German states: 6 January, Corpus Christi, 15 August and 1 November come on top of the nationwide days. Trucks over 7.5 t may not drive on Sundays and public holidays, and on selected motorways on Saturdays in July and August, including routes towards the Alps. Oktoberfest in late September and early October and the major trade fairs, such as the construction machinery fair held every three years, make capacity tighter, so book early. The area inside the Mittlerer Ring is a low-emission zone for vehicles with a green sticker only, and the old town has pedestrian zones with morning delivery windows.

Matching the vehicle to the goods

Chemicals from eastern Bavaria are often dangerous goods; we arrange ADR transport with suitably equipped vehicles and need the safety data sheet and UN numbers. Beer and dairy go refrigerated, production parts often as a full truck with a fixed slot, or by express van when a line is at risk of stopping. Check the price for your exact addresses in our calculator. For pick-ups at automotive plants and suppliers, ask the shipper for the gate or ramp number, the booked time window and any load-securing requirements; without them a truck is often turned away at the gate.
