A region of specialist suppliers

Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg and the hub of a region where engineering is the dominant industry. Hundreds of family-owned medium-sized firms in the Neckar, Rems and Fils valleys make components, tools and machines that end up in factories across Europe, including many in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Shipments from here tend to be regular, high-value and time-critical rather than bulky.

Typical imports from the Stuttgart area to Czechia:

  • automotive components such as drivetrain parts, vehicle electronics, filters, seals and injection or braking systems,
  • machine tools, workholding equipment, cutting tools and spare parts,
  • measuring, control and sensor technology, hydraulics and pneumatics,
  • packaging machinery and power tools,
  • Württemberg wine, grown partly within Stuttgart's own city limits.

In the other direction, Czech suppliers ship castings, forgings, stampings, machined and plastic parts and wiring harnesses to Swabian customers, usually into a booked delivery slot.

Route and transit time

Prague to Stuttgart is approximately 500 km: the D5 to the Rozvadov/Waidhaus border, the A6 past Amberg and Nuremberg to Heilbronn, then the A81 south. One driver covers this in a day, so a morning collection in Prague usually means delivery the same evening or the next working morning. From Brno the distance is roughly 700 km with delivery on the next working day, either via Prague or through Austria and Munich on the A8, which climbs the Swabian Jura on a section known for congestion. See our Prague – Nuremberg route for the first leg.

German motorway and federal-road tolls apply to trucks over 3.5 tonnes and are included in the figure shown by our online calculator.

Delivering into a city built in a basin

Central Stuttgart sits in a narrow basin surrounded by hills and vineyards. Residential streets are steep and tight, and the roads out of the basin are among the busiest in Germany. Most industrial sites are therefore in the Neckar valley, on the Filder plateau around the airport and in neighbouring towns. For a workshop or shop in the centre, a smaller rigid truck works better than an articulated trailer, and slots outside rush hour avoid long delays.

The entire city area is a low-emission zone. We only send vehicles with the green sticker and a current emission class. The river port on the Neckar in the east of the city handles goods that arrive by barge from the Rhine; cargo stored in port warehouses is collected like any other dock loading.

Choosing the right service

A few pallets of components travel efficiently as groupage, typically in two to three working days. A machine tool needs a dedicated truck, often a curtainsider with a sliding roof for crane loading; we need its dimensions, weight and centre of gravity. A spare part for a stopped production line can leave the same day in an express van. Paints, adhesives and surface-treatment chemicals go with an ADR-certified carrier, and wine is best moved in a temperature-controlled trailer in summer and winter.

Holidays and booked slots

Trucks over 7.5 tonnes may not drive in Germany on Sundays and public holidays between midnight and 10 pm, and in July and August there is also a Saturday ban on selected motorways. Baden-Württemberg adds its own holidays: Epiphany on 6 January, Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day on 1 November. Car plants and large customers accept goods only in pre-booked slots, so please send us the booking reference with your order.
