What Verona supplies

The province of Verona combines farming, food production and stone working, and almost all of it is shipped north at some point:

• Wine – Valpolicella and Amarone from the northern hills, white Soave from the east of the province, Bardolino and Lugana from Lake Garda.
• Fruit and vegetables – the plain south of the city is a major orchard area; Verona peaches and nectarines carry a protected geographical indication, and apples and kiwi fruit are also grown.
• Rice – the Vialone Nano variety from the south of the province.
• Bakery and confectionery – Verona is the home of pandoro, and both pandoro and panettone are baked industrially in the province.
• Marble and stone – Valpolicella has a long tradition of quarrying and processing marble and stone, shipped as slabs, tiles and blocks.
• Furniture – the south of the province is known for classic-style furniture.
• Olive oil from the shores of Lake Garda.

A seasonal calendar

Christmas cakes are bulky and light, so a truck fills up by volume long before weight. Loading slots at producers book up quickly before Christmas, so order transport several weeks ahead. Fresh fruit travels in a reefer or in refrigerated groupage, and wine in summer in a temperature-controlled trailer.

Route and rail hub

From Prague, Verona is approximately 750–800 km by road via Rozvadov, Munich, Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass, after which the A22 descends the Adige valley straight to the city. From Brno it is approximately 830 km via Vienna, Villach, Tarvisio and the A4. A full truck loaded in Verona in the morning usually reaches the Czech Republic on the morning of the second working day; groupage pallets take 3–4 working days.

South-west of the city, where the A4 and A22 cross, lies one of Italy's largest intermodal freight centres. A large share of its traffic goes by rail over the Brenner to Germany, in containers or as semi-trailers loaded onto wagons. Warehouses and distribution sites cluster around it, so loading in Verona is usually quick and close to the motorway.

In Tyrol, heavy trucks face a night driving ban, a sectoral ban on certain goods including stone, and truck metering at Kufstein on busy days, so for stone we sometimes route via Tarvisio. Italy bans vehicles over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays, Austria at weekends and Germany on Sundays; tolls apply in all three.

Stone, furniture and wine paperwork

Marble slabs travel upright in A-frames or in crates and quickly reach the weight limit, so carriers need the number and weight of frames and how they are placed on the trailer. Classic furniture is light but easily dented and sensitive to damp, so wrap it and mark it non-stackable. Smaller consignments of furniture or stone suit our pallet transport.

For wine, the excise regime decides the paperwork. Wine shipped under duty suspension travels with an electronic administrative document and the Czech consignee must be authorised to receive it; duty-paid wine uses a simplified accompanying document.
