What Lazio ships north

The Rome region is better known for ministries and tourism than for industry, yet it is one of Italy's main centres of pharmaceutical production, with plants south of the city around Pomezia and in the province of Latina. The Agro Pontino plain is one of Europe's leading kiwi-growing areas and also supplies vegetables, artichokes and melons. Civita Castellana in northern Lazio is known for sanitary ceramics such as washbasins and toilets, the Sabina hills produce protected-origin olive oil and the Castelli Romani hills give Frascati white wine.

Typical loads from Rome to Czech customers:

  • pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and cosmetics under temperature control
  • kiwifruit, vegetables and other fresh produce in reefers
  • sanitary ceramics and tiles
  • olive oil, wine, sheep's cheese and pasta for retail and catering
  • chemical and plastic products from industrial zones south of the city

Southbound, we move Czech automotive parts, machinery, glass and glass packaging, beer, paper, furniture and building materials.

Two ways across the Alps

From Bohemia the usual route runs on the D5 via Rozvadov, past Munich to Kufstein, Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass, then on the A22 to Verona and Modena and the A1 via Bologna and Florence to Rome – about 1,300 km. From Moravia the eastern route via Vienna, the Austrian A2, Villach and the Arnoldstein – Tarvisio crossing, then the A23 and A4 towards Venice and on via Padua and Bologna, is often shorter at roughly 1,250 km from Brno. A full truck with one driver takes two to three working days given mandatory breaks and rest periods; pallet groupage usually needs four to six working days. For northern Italy see our Prague – Milan lane.

Driving restrictions along the way

Italy bans trucks over 7.5 t during the day on Sundays and public holidays, and on selected Saturdays and Fridays in summer, under a calendar issued every year. Austria bans heavy trucks from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00 and restricts night driving; Tyrol adds a sectoral ban for certain goods and, on busy days, metered truck entry near Kufstein. Germany bans trucks on Sundays and holidays, and on Saturdays in July and August. Italian motorways charge tolls at toll stations by distance, while Austria and Germany use electronic tolling. We therefore plan Rome collections early in the week so trucks do not get stuck in the Alps over a weekend.

Collecting and delivering in Rome

Rome is circled by the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) ring road, connected to the A1 north and south. Warehouses cluster along the ring, near the A1 junctions and along the Via Pontina towards Pomezia and Latina. The historic centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) where goods vehicles need a permit and fixed time windows, and a wider low-emission zone excludes older vehicles, so city-centre deliveries go by smaller vehicles. Air cargo is handled at Fiumicino Airport; Rome's seaport is Civitavecchia, about 70 km north-west, mainly a ferry and cruise port with cargo terminals.

Service options and documents

Pharmaceuticals need a temperature-controlled vehicle with continuous logging, fresh produce a reefer. Heavy and fragile sanitary ceramics need careful load securing and often a full truck. Smaller volumes of oil, wine or cosmetics suit pallet groupage, and flammable chemicals travel with ADR-equipped carriers. Inside the EU a CMR note and an invoice or delivery note are enough, plus a temperature record for food and medicines; for wine and spirits we check whether an excise accompanying document is required.
