Frozen fish and seafood

Vigo is one of Europe's largest fishing ports and among the leaders for fish landed for human consumption. Catches come not only from the local fleet but also from vessels fishing far out in the Atlantic. Around the port there is a dense food industry of cold stores, processing plants and canneries. Galicia is also Spain's main region for canned fish, and mussels are farmed on a large scale in the Rías Baixas inlets.

  • Frozen fish, fillets and seafood travel in freezer trailers set to around −18 °C or lower, as the producer requires.
  • Canned fish and seafood – tuna, sardines, mussels, octopus – need no cooling but are heavy.
  • Chilled fish products with a short shelf life are better suited to a double-crewed truck that runs almost non-stop.

With frozen goods the temperature must not rise during the journey, so the temperature record for the whole trip is part of the paperwork and is checked on delivery. For these loads we book carriers with freezer trailers and working data loggers.

Car plant, shipyards and granite

Vigo is not only about fish. The city has one of Spain's largest car plants, surrounded by suppliers of body and plastic parts, seats and electronics; parts from Galicia supply Czech plants and Czech components travel the other way. Shipyards and marine equipment makers line the estuary.

O Porriño, about 15 km south of Vigo, is one of Spain's main granite quarrying and processing centres. Stone slabs are extremely heavy: a truck reaches its weight limit with a small volume, and slabs travel upright on A-frame racks, firmly secured. We need the exact dimensions and weight of each slab.

The longest route from northern Spain

Vigo sits in the far north-western corner of the peninsula, roughly 2,650 km from Prague. Trucks take the A-52 via Ourense into Castile, continue via Valladolid or León to Burgos and along the A-1 to the French border at Irun, then via Bordeaux and Paris into Germany. With 600–700 km per driver per day plus the weekend rest, a full truck usually arrives in 5–6 working days; groupage from Galicia takes around 6–9 working days. The A-52 crosses mountain passes where snow is possible in winter. French weekend and holiday bans and the German Sunday ban apply, and tolls are due in France, Germany, the Czech Republic and on some Spanish motorways.

A few pallets of canned goods or parts go by pallet groupage; larger volumes and stone by full truckload.

Galicia and northern Portugal

The Portuguese border is only about 30 km from Vigo and Porto about 150 km. Carriers therefore often combine pickups in Vigo and northern Portugal on one truck – worth planning together if you have suppliers on both sides.
