Where the A3 meets the A7

Würzburg, the capital of Lower Franconia in north-western Bavaria, sits on the River Main at one of Germany's key motorway junctions. The A3 from Cologne via Frankfurt to Nuremberg crosses the A7 from Hamburg via Kassel to Ulm here, and the A81 to Stuttgart begins at the city. Federal roads B8, B13, B19 and B27 add to the network. A large share of north–south and Rhineland–Bavaria truck traffic passes Würzburg, and warehouses along the motorways make the most of that location.

The Main links Würzburg with the Rhine and, via the Main–Danube Canal, with the Danube, placing the city on a continuous waterway from the North Sea to the Black Sea. The city port, majority-owned by the municipal utility, transfers cargo between barge, rail and road.

Franconian wine in flat round bottles

Würzburg is the capital of Franconian wine. The Würzburger Stein is one of Germany's oldest and largest vineyards, three of the country's fifteen largest wineries are based in the city, Silvaner is the signature grape and the Bocksbeutel – a flattened round bottle protected for the region – is the signature pack. Practical consequences:

  • Bocksbeutel cartons stack differently from slim bottles, so ask the winery to confirm cartons per pallet and weight.
  • Wine must not freeze in winter or overheat in summer; outside spring and autumn we use temperature-controlled trailers.
  • Hillside wineries along the Main often have narrow access and side loading only – a van or tail-lift truck suits small orders.
  • For sparkling wine and other goods subject to excise duty, agree the tax documents with the shipper in advance.

Printing presses and bearings

Würzburg has built printing presses for two centuries: one of the first factories for steam-driven high-speed presses was founded here in 1817. Press parts and complete units still ship from the city to printers worldwide, including Czech ones. About 40 km north-east lies Schweinfurt, Germany's centre of rolling-bearing production, which also makes automotive components. Typical imports from the region to Czechia are press parts and spares, bearings and car components, Franconian wine, beer and food, and goods from warehouses along the A3 and A7.

Heavy machine parts loaded by crane travel in sliding-roof or curtain-side trailers with proper securing. Please mention anything beyond standard trailer dimensions when you enquire: abnormal loads need special permits and more lead time. A spare part for a press standing idle in a Czech print shop is best sent by express van. Czech exports to Würzburg include engineering products, packaging, paper, glass and building materials.

To the Czech border in a morning

Würzburg is one of the nearest major German cities outside the border region. Trucks take the A3 to Nuremberg, the A6 to the Waidhaus / Rozvadov crossing and the D5 via Plzeň to Prague – roughly 410 km. With morning loading, delivery in Prague can be the same afternoon or the next working morning. Brno is about 610 km, next working day. The Nuremberg section is described on the Prague – Nuremberg route. The A3 between Würzburg and Nuremberg is busy and often has roadworks, so we build in a buffer for fixed delivery times.

Bavarian holidays and paperwork

Bavaria has more public holidays than most German states, including Epiphany on 6 January, Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day on 1 November. On those days, as on Sundays, trucks over 7.5 t may not run, and summer Saturdays bring restrictions on selected motorways. Toll applies on motorways and federal roads. Goods from Germany are EU goods: a CMR note with an invoice or delivery note is enough, and a packing list is useful for bearings and machine parts. Get an indicative price in the calculator.
