Debrecen – historic centre

From market town to EV hub

With around 200,000 inhabitants, Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city and the capital of Hajdú-Bihar county. For a long time it was mainly a university and trading town on the Great Hungarian Plain. That has changed quickly: at the end of 2025 a new car plant building only electric vehicles started series production here, and a large battery cell plant has gone up near the city. Suppliers, packaging producers and logistics centres are settling around both sites.

Debrecen also has a long pharmaceutical tradition, alongside electronics and measuring equipment, automotive components and food processing.

What travels between Debrecen and Czechia

Common imports into the Czech Republic:

  • EV components, electronics and wiring,
  • pharmaceuticals, active ingredients and medical supplies,
  • sausages and meat products (the Debrecener sausage is named after the city), poultry and pork,
  • maize, grain and sunflower from the plain,
  • plastic and metal parts from automotive suppliers.

Czech firms ship machinery and spare parts for new factory halls, castings, pressings, electronics, packaging and building materials to Debrecen. New industrial construction also creates demand for steel structures and equipment, often with oversized pieces.

Route and transit times

The usual route runs from Brno along the D2 via Bratislava to the Rajka crossing, on the M15 and M1 past Győr to Budapest, around the M0 ring to the M3 and then on the M35 to Debrecen. Brno is about 560 km away and Prague around 760 km. With one driver covering roughly 600–700 km a day, a full load reaches Brno in one working day and Prague in two. Groupage takes three to four working days.

Hungary charges an electronic toll for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and bans trucks over 7.5 tonnes at weekends (see our Budapest page). On a route this long the loading day matters: a truck loaded on Thursday reaches Prague on Friday, while one loaded on Friday arrives on Monday.

Batteries and electronics

Lithium batteries and modules from EV production are class 9 dangerous goods under ADR. They require approved packaging, marking, documents and, in larger quantities, an equipped vehicle and an ADR-certified driver. Damaged or defective batteries returned to the manufacturer fall under stricter rules. We book ADR transport for these loads and need the safety data sheet, UN number and battery weight from the shipper.

Electronics without batteries travel as normal freight but need a clean, dry trailer and well-secured pallets. Pharmaceuticals often need a temperature-controlled trailer with a continuous temperature log.

Next door to Romania

Debrecen is about 30 km from the Romanian border and roughly 70 km from Oradea. Since January 2025 Romania has been fully in Schengen, so there are no border checks at Ártánd/Borș. A truck heading to Debrecen can easily combine pick-ups or drops in western Romania, which helps fill vehicles on a long route.

Loading tips

New industrial sites tend to have strict entry rules: booked slots, driver pre-registration, safety equipment and no access to production halls. Without a confirmed booking a truck may be turned away at the gate. Before booking, confirm the address and gate, the time slot, pallet count, size and weight, any ADR goods and required temperatures. On this distance a full truckload pays off from about half a trailer; smaller shipments go by groupage. No customs apply within the EU. Prices are in the calculator.
