Freight forwarding Szeged – transport to and from the Czech Republic
Road freight between Szeged and the Czech Republic: ground paprika, Makó onions, salami and parts for a new car plant. M5 route, Serbian and Romanian borders.

The City of Sunshine at the Tisza and Maros
With close to 160,000 inhabitants, Szeged is Hungary's third-largest city and the main centre of the southern Great Plain. Hungarians call it the City of Sunshine, as it gets nearly 2,000 hours of sun a year, more than anywhere else in the country. Its broad avenues date from after the great flood of 1879, when the Tisza destroyed most houses and the city was rebuilt. Szeged has a large university and, since 2018, a European laser research centre.
What matters for freight is location: Szeged is the last major Hungarian city before the Serbian border and sits on the way to western Romania, so trucks pass through towards Belgrade, Timișoara and south-eastern Europe.
Paprika, onions and salami
Szeged ground paprika and the paprika from Kalocsa are Hungary's best-known spices. Peppers are harvested from late summer into autumn, then dried and milled, so paprika and spice shipments peak between autumn and spring. Makó, about 30 km east, is famous for onions with protected geographical indication, and the city has made long-life salami since the 19th century.
Ground paprika is delicate: it absorbs odours, fades in light and spoils in damp conditions. We never load it with chemicals, paints or strong-smelling goods and insist on a clean, dry, closed load space. Onions, by contrast, need ventilation and protection from frost, and salami travels chilled.
- ground paprika, dried peppers and spice blends;
- Makó onions and other vegetables from the southern plain;
- long-life salami and meat products;
- equipment and pipes from the oil and gas industry;
- parts and materials from suppliers to the new car plant.
Oil fields and an electric car factory
Oil was discovered near Szeged in 1965, and Algyő, just outside the city, is Hungary's largest oil and gas field. Service companies there need pipes, valves, pumps and spare parts, which creates business for Czech engineering firms and valve makers.
The biggest recent change is a new electric car plant on the city's outskirts. Trial production began in early 2026, and as series output ramps up, demand grows for deliveries of parts, packaging and production equipment, including from Czech subcontractors. Such loads usually have a fixed unloading slot, so we plan departures with a buffer.
Route and transit times
From Brno, trucks take the D2 past Bratislava to the Rajka crossing, the M1 towards Budapest, the M0 ring road and then the M5 motorway via Kecskemét to Szeged. That is about 500 km from Brno and around 710 km from Prague. A truck loaded in Szeged in the morning is in Brno by evening and in Prague the next working day; groupage takes three to four working days. Our Budapest page covers the route through the capital.
Hungary charges distance-based e-tolls for vehicles over 3.5 t and bans trucks over 7.5 t at weekends and on holidays. Summers in Szeged are very hot, so food moves in temperature-controlled vehicles during the warm months.
On the edge of Schengen
South of the city, the Röszke/Horgoš crossing on the M5 is one of the busiest entry points into the Schengen area. Serbia is not in the EU, so loads heading south need an export declaration and Serbian customs documents, and waiting times can run to many hours in summer and before holidays. We handle these as international forwarding with carriers experienced in customs procedures.
To the east, the M43 runs via Makó to the Csanádpalota/Nădlac crossing into Romania. Romania has been a full Schengen member since 2025, so routine checks there have ended and a delivery to Timișoara can easily be combined with a pick-up in Szeged.
Before booking, tell us how paprika is packed, whether onions are in sacks or boxes, and for Serbian loads prepare the commercial invoice and packing list.
