What a freight forwarder actually does
A forwarder organises transport. We own no trucks, but we know the carrier market – who runs which lanes, with what equipment and on what terms. For you that means one contact instead of hunting for a carrier on every job. On each order we:
- select a vetted contracted carrier with the right vehicle and liability insurance,
- give precise instructions on loading, unloading, time slots and load securing,
- prepare or check the transport documents,
- monitor the shipment and handle surprises en route,
- manage communication with the carrier and support your claim if goods are damaged or late.
Documents inside and outside the EU
The core document in road freight is the CMR consignment note. It is normally issued in three originals – for shipper, carrier and consignee – and confirms both collection and delivery. Every shipment also needs an invoice or delivery note.
Within the European Union there is no customs; goods move freely. Shipments to or from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and Turkey are different: they require export and import customs declarations, and both parties need an EORI number. Goods from Turkey may also travel with an A.TR movement certificate. Clearance is handled by a customs broker; we arrange one and align them with the transport schedule so the truck does not sit at the border.
Incoterms: who pays for transport
The delivery term in your purchase contract decides who books and pays for transport and where risk passes. For imports into Czechia these are the most common:
| Term | Who arranges transport | What it means for you as buyer |
|---|---|---|
| EXW – Ex Works | Buyer | You book transport from the seller's gate; for non-EU exports you also handle export clearance |
| FCA – Free Carrier | Buyer | The seller hands goods to your carrier, usually loaded and export-cleared |
| DAP – Delivered at Place | Seller | The supplier pays transport; you handle unloading and any import duty |
When buying EXW or FCA, booking transport with us keeps it under your control – and is often better value than freight the supplier builds into the goods price.
Claims and damage under CMR
International road transport is governed by the CMR Convention. Carrier liability is capped at 8.33 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per kilogram of gross weight of the lost or damaged goods. For light, high-value cargo that may fall short, so consider cargo insurance.
- Visible damage must be noted on the CMR by the consignee at unloading, ideally with photos.
- Hidden damage must be reported to the carrier in writing within seven days of delivery, excluding Sundays and public holidays.
- Claims for delay must be made in writing within 21 days of the goods being placed at the consignee's disposal.
If something goes wrong, contact us straight away. We collect the evidence and take the claim up with the carrier.
Importing goods and materials into Czechia
We organise imports from every EU country and selected non-EU countries. We need the supplier's address, the delivery term, the shipment size and, where relevant, your EORI number. Depending on volume we choose a full truck, pallet groupage or express. Check an indicative price in the calculator.
