Brno – Vienna transport and imports from Lower Austria to South Moravia
⚡ Fast dispatch available · Price calculation in 30 minutes · full transport documentation

At roughly 145 km, or about two hours of driving, Brno–Vienna is less a long-haul lane than a regional shuttle. The question is not whether goods arrive the next day but whether they arrive before lunch. A van or truck can do the round trip in one shift, which makes the route well suited to repeated daily runs.
Border crossings: Mikulov or Břeclav
The main road runs south on the D52 via Pohořelice to Mikulov, then across the Mikulov–Drasenhofen crossing onto the Austrian A5, which ends on the northern edge of Vienna. On the Czech side the D52 is not yet finished all the way to the border, so the last few kilometres around Mikulov are on an ordinary trunk road.
For pickups in eastern Vienna or out on the Marchfeld plain, the D2 via Břeclav can be quicker. The carrier chooses the road based on the loading address, vehicle size and traffic; we propose the routing once you send the details.
What South Moravia imports from Austria
Brno buys different goods from Austria than Prague does. Besides Vienna's warehouses, loading often happens in the farming and industrial belt around the city:
- fresh vegetables from the Marchfeld east of Vienna: carrots, onions, asparagus, salads,
- wine from the Weinviertel, in bulk or bottled,
- building materials such as cement, dry mixes, insulation and roofing,
- steel sections and components for engineering firms in South Moravia,
- spare parts and service stock from Vienna distribution centres,
- pharmaceuticals and lab supplies for Brno hospitals and research sites.
Brno sends machinery, electrical goods, IT hardware, food and drinks the other way, so import and export can often be paired and the vehicle does not run empty.
Express, pallets or a full truck
On a short lane the options compare differently than on long-distance routes. An express van, carrying up to about 1.2 tonnes, is worth it for parts needed by a stopped production line, with collection and delivery done within hours. Groupage pallets suit regular small orders where one to three working days through a cross-dock is fine. A full truck makes sense for building materials, steel or larger wine orders and arrives the same day. Refrigerated vehicles are a must for harvested vegetables and for wine in summer.
For urgent cargo see express transport. If your goods continue from Vienna to Bohemia, the Prague – Vienna route is the relevant page.
Weekends and holidays on both sides
Austria bans vehicles over 7.5 tonnes from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00 and on public holidays; the Czech Republic restricts them on Sunday and holiday afternoons and evenings. The holiday calendars do not match: 8 December, for example, is a holiday in Austria with warehouses closed, while Czech businesses work as usual. Vans up to 3.5 tonnes are not affected by the bans, but a closed warehouse stops them too.
Austrian motorways charge a distance-based toll for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; lighter ones need a vignette. No customs declaration is needed between the two countries.
Documents and preparation
Shipments move on a CMR note with an invoice or delivery note. For vegetables and wine we recommend a temperature record, and for wine an excise accompanying document if the supplier issues one. Please have your Austrian supplier confirm the address and opening hours, as farms often load very early, whether there is a dock or side loading by forklift, the number, height and weight of pallets, and a warehouse contact who speaks German or English.
The price calculator gives you the cost of a specific shipment. Our dispatch team works weekdays from 8:00 to 18:00 and usually replies with a non-binding offer within 30 minutes.
