A lane short enough for a same-day round trip
Dresden is the closest large German city to Prague: approximately 150 km on the D8 and the German A17, or about two hours on the road. Goods collected in Dresden in the morning can be in Prague before lunch, and a van can return for a second load the same day. Full trucks are delivered on the day of loading; groupage pallets usually take one to two working days. That makes this lane a natural fit for just-in-time supply where a plant cannot afford large stocks.
The border: why trucks use Krásný Les
Heavy traffic crosses at the motorway border point Krásný Les / Breitenau. The old road over Cínovec and Altenberg is restricted for through trucks and mainly serves local deliveries, while the narrow riverside roads through Hřensko are not suitable for lorries at all. Only pickups in the Ore Mountains or Saxon Switzerland themselves call for local roads and usually a smaller vehicle. In winter we keep an eye on the weather on the mountain ridge, where the D8 climbs above 600 metres.
Saxon goods heading to Czechia
The Dresden area is one of Europe's main microelectronics clusters, and Saxony has strong car, machinery and chemical industries. The imports we arrange most often include:
- semiconductor components, circuit boards and electronic modules,
- precision optical and technical glass,
- car parts from Saxon automotive suppliers,
- printing, machine-tool and textile machinery and spare parts,
- pharmaceuticals and laboratory equipment,
- chemical raw materials, plastic granulate and technical gases from the Leipzig and Halle area,
- food, bakery products and Elbe valley wine,
- secondary raw materials such as scrap metal and waste paper.
Czech exports to Saxony include building materials, sawn timber, glass, beer, castings and machine parts, so return loads are easy to combine.
Loading tips for Dresden and the surrounding area
Electronics and precision glass dislike shocks and moisture, so for these shipments we book air-suspension trailers with an intact curtain and, where needed, each pallet strapped individually. Plants in the industrial zones around Dresden and Freiberg tend to work with fixed time slots and expect the vehicle, plate number and driver's name to be announced in advance. The Elbe river port in Dresden has a transhipment terminal where goods arriving by barge or rail can be transferred to a truck for the last leg to Czechia.
Buying from several Saxon suppliers? One truck can collect in Dresden, Freiberg and Chemnitz in sequence and deliver everything to you in one go, which saves separate runs and extra goods-receiving work.
Which service fits
- Express van for a spare part or sample needed within hours, see express transport.
- Groupage pallets for regular smaller orders without a rush.
- Full truckload for a full trailer or goods you do not want reloaded.
- ADR for chemicals, paints, batteries and gases, carried by equipped hauliers with trained drivers, see dangerous goods transport.
Documents, holidays and rules
A CMR consignment note and an invoice or delivery note are all you need; there is no customs within the EU. Dangerous goods also need an ADR transport document from the shipper. Trucks over 7.5 tonnes cannot run in Germany on Sundays and public holidays. Saxony has two extra holidays: Reformation Day on 31 October and the Day of Repentance and Prayer, a Wednesday in November. Warehouses and factories close on both, so we schedule pickups for the day before or after. German and Czech tolls are included in the price, which you can check in our freight calculator.
