Zeebrugge: a port where cargo rolls on and off

While most visitors know Bruges for its medieval centre, freight forwarders know it for Zeebrugge, about 15 km to the north on the coast. The Boudewijn Canal links the seaport with the inner port of Bruges. Since April 2022 Zeebrugge has been managed together with Antwerp as one port authority, but the two sites remain very different. Antwerp is dominated by containers and chemicals; Zeebrugge specialises in:

  • ferry and ro-ro services to the UK and Ireland, plus routes to Scandinavia and Spain, many carrying unaccompanied trailers;
  • new cars – Zeebrugge ranks among the world's largest ports for vehicle imports and exports;
  • liquefied natural gas, through one of Europe's largest LNG terminals;
  • fresh fruit and fish, handled at a fruit terminal and the Flemish fish auction in the inner port.

UK goods heading for Central Europe

For Czech buyers, Zeebrugge is often the entry point for goods from Britain and Ireland. A trailer arrives on the ferry, we collect it with a tractor unit and either deliver it straight to the Czech Republic or transload the cargo. Because the UK is outside the EU, a British shipment needs an export declaration on the UK side, EORI numbers for both shipper and consignee, and either clearance in Belgium or a transit document with clearance in Czechia. Food and plants may also need veterinary or phytosanitary certificates. Irish cargo, by contrast, is EU goods and moves without customs formalities. Exports in the other direction are covered on our UK transport page.

Zeebrugge also works for Czech exports to the British Isles: a loaded trailer can be delivered to the port and shipped unaccompanied, with a local tractor collecting it on arrival. The driver turns back for home and no time is lost waiting for a crossing.

Frozen and chilled loads from West Flanders

The countryside around Bruges is one of Europe's major centres for potato and vegetable processing. Frozen fries, potato products and frozen vegetables leave from here for retailers and caterers across the continent, the Czech Republic included. For these we book a freezer trailer set to around −20 °C with a continuous temperature record. Fresh fish from the auction and fruit from the port travel chilled, usually at 0–4 °C, and we aim for same-day departure after loading.

The truck takes the E40 past Ghent and Brussels to Liège and Aachen, then crosses Germany via Cologne, Frankfurt and Nuremberg to the Rozvadov crossing. Belgium and Germany both charge distance-based truck tolls. Belgium has no general weekend ban; Germany bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays. For urgent chilled freight a double-manned truck saves roughly a day.

Deliveries into historic Bruges

Inside the R30 ring road a 12-tonne limit applies, and vehicles between 3.5 and 12 tonnes may only deliver from 06:00 to 11:00 and from 19:00 to 21:00. Since October 2025 almost the entire centre has also been a cycle zone with a 30 km/h limit. We never send an articulated trailer in there; goods for hotels, shops and restaurants are transferred to a van or handed to a local delivery service.

What to send us before a port collection

  • the ferry booking or trailer release number and the terminal name;
  • commercial invoice, EORI numbers and transit details for UK goods;
  • the required temperature for frozen or chilled cargo.
