Freight forwarding Charleroi – transport to and from Czechia
Road freight from Charleroi to the Czech Republic: special steel plate, flat glass, aerospace parts, biotech and Sambre port cargo. Routes, transit, paperwork.
The Black Country, reinvented
The area around Charleroi is still called the Pays Noir. Coal, glassworks and ironworks made it one of the most heavily industrialised districts of nineteenth-century Europe, and conical spoil heaps, the terrils, still rise above the streets. The former Bois du Cazier colliery at Marcinelle, scene of the 1956 mining disaster, now belongs to a UNESCO World Heritage listing. With roughly 200,000 inhabitants, Charleroi is the largest city in Wallonia, and its economy has regrouped around a few distinct trades that matter for freight planning.
A local plate mill rolls heavy stainless and special carbon steel plate used by makers of machinery, tanks and energy equipment. Flat glass is still made in the Sambre valley, and a long electrical engineering tradition continues in traction equipment for rail vehicles. Next to the airport at Gosselies, a science park hosts around 150 companies in aeronautics, biotechnology and industrial engineering. A large construction machinery plant in Gosselies closed in 2017, and its site is being taken over by new businesses.
Typical cargo heading east
- special and stainless steel plate, sheets and cut blanks,
- float and processed flat glass for construction and vehicles,
- aerostructure components and precision-machined aluminium and titanium parts,
- biologics, vaccines and diagnostics that must stay within a set temperature range,
- electrical equipment and spares for trains and trams,
- bulk and containerised goods from the waterside sites on the Sambre.
Westbound, Czech and Slovak suppliers send car components, engineering products, glass, ceramics, paper, plastics and building materials. Warehouses along the Walloon motorways also serve as a base for distribution into northern France, whose border is only about 30 km away.
An inland port few people know
The Charleroi port authority manages 29 waterside sites along the Sambre and the Brussels–Charleroi canal, together handling around 5 million tonnes a year. Inland waterways connect them with Antwerp, Rotterdam and Dunkirk, and a trimodal platform with a gantry crane moves containers between barge, rail and road. Overseas cargo can therefore arrive by barge and only switch to a truck for the final run to the Czech Republic. For a port pickup we need the site name, the container or lot number, opening hours and whether the goods are under cover.
Two roads, similar distance
Prague to Charleroi is approximately 920–950 km either way. The northern option follows the D5 through Rozvadov, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Cologne and Aachen, then the E40 to Liège and the E42 via Namur. The southern option runs through Nuremberg, Mannheim and Saarland into Luxembourg and then crosses the Ardennes on the E411 to Namur. We use it when traffic around Cologne is heavy, accepting that the Ardennes can bring snow in winter. The city itself is circled by the R3 ring road, linked to the A54 towards Brussels and the E42 north of the centre.
| Option | Suits | Transit to Prague |
|---|---|---|
| Full truck | steel plate, glass racks, full production runs | 2 working days |
| Groupage pallets | spare parts, small orders | 3–5 working days |
| Express van | urgent aerospace or lab shipments | next day in most cases |
Equipment and paperwork
Flat glass travels on an inloader trailer with an internal rack or on returnable A-frames, so the consignee must be able to unload them. Steel plate is lashed on a flatbed or curtainsider, and crane capacity at both ends decides how heavy each bundle can be. Biologics go in a reefer with continuous temperature logging, handled by a carrier used to pharmaceutical distribution rules; urgent samples suit express transport. Belgium charges a distance-based toll for vehicles over 3.5 t and has no general weekend truck ban, though German Sundays interrupt the journey. Within the EU no customs apply: a CMR note and an invoice or delivery note are enough.
