Freight forwarding Chemnitz – transport to and from Czechia
Chemnitz is about 160 km from Prague over the Ore Mountains. Engines, machine tools, car parts and textiles shipped to Czechia by pallet, full truck or van.
Saxony's old engineering city
Chemnitz earned the nickname Saxon Manchester in the nineteenth century, when spinning mills and builders of textile machinery, locomotives and machine tools filled its valley. Between 1953 and 1990 it was called Karl-Marx-Stadt. The engineering backbone survived: the city today produces car engines, machine tools and automation equipment, and its technical university works on lightweight structures and materials. Around 40 km to the west, Zwickau assembles electric cars, so the corridor between the two cities functions as one supply region. In 2025 Chemnitz shared the title of European Capital of Culture with Nova Gorica.
Two ways across the border
The direct route runs from Prague on the D7 to Chomutov, climbs the I/7 over the ridge to the Reitzenhain crossing and continues on federal road B174 through Marienberg to Chemnitz, roughly 160 km in total. The motorway alternative goes over the D8 to Dresden and west on the A4, about 230 km but without mountain gradients or village through-roads.
Vans with urgent parts take the mountain road and reach Prague in under four hours. Heavy trucks in winter, when snow and ice cover the ridge, are better routed via Dresden. From Brno count on about 370 km and next-working-day delivery.
Typical loads heading to Czechia
- engines, engine components, castings and machined parts,
- machine tools, spindles, tooling and spare parts,
- control cabinets, measuring and automation equipment,
- technical textiles and fabrics,
- wooden Christmas decorations and nutcrackers from Ore Mountain workshops, mostly shipped in summer and autumn.
Southbound flows are just as relevant in reverse: Saxon engineering firms buy metal parts, castings, plastic mouldings and building materials from suppliers in the Ústí and Karlovy Vary regions.
Production in the Ore Mountains is spread across smaller firms in the valleys around Marienberg, Annaberg-Buchholz and Olbernhau. If you buy from several of them, there is no need for each to send its own consignment. We can plan a round trip in which one truck collects from two to four shippers and crosses at Reitzenhain with everything on board. This works best for weekly orders with a fixed collection day, because each supplier knows exactly when the truck will come and has the goods packed and labelled.
Machines, pallets or a part needed today
For a machine tool we need dimensions, weight, centre of gravity and whether it will be lifted by crane or loaded by forklift; we then book a curtain-side trailer that opens from the top or side. A few pallets of parts travel efficiently with our groupage pallet service. A component for a stopped line goes by van as express transport over Reitzenhain. Oils, paints and coolants are carried by an ADR-certified carrier with the safety data sheet on board. Decorative wooden items are light but fragile and bulky, so for those we quote by pallet space rather than weight and ask the shipper to mark the cartons as non-stackable.
Saxon calendar and the border
Saxony keeps two holidays most German states do not: Reformation Day on 31 October and the Day of Repentance and Prayer, a Wednesday in the second half of November. On those days, as on Sundays, trucks over 7.5 t are banned from the roads. Truck toll applies above 3.5 t on motorways and federal roads, including the B174.
The German federal police run spot checks at Reitzenhain, which can add a short delay. Industrial estates along the A4 and A72 work with booked loading slots, so ask the shipper for a reference number and time window. Vans and lighter vehicles normally use Reitzenhain. Heavy trucks, especially in winter, are routed over the D8 and A4.
Engines and automotive parts, machine tools and spare parts, automation equipment and technical textiles.
Yes. Send us the dimensions, weight, centre of gravity and loading method and we will book a suitable curtain-side trailer.
Reformation Day on 31 October and the Day of Repentance and Prayer in November, both with a ban on trucks over 7.5 t.
A van via Reitzenhain reaches north-western Bohemia in two to three hours and Prague usually within four hours of collection.
