Freight forwarding Coimbra – transport to and from the Czech Republic
Road freight from Coimbra to the Czech Republic: temperature-controlled pharmaceuticals, Bairrada sparkling wine, Figueira da Foz paper, ceramics, bike parts.
A university city in the middle of Portugal
Coimbra is best known for its university, one of the oldest in Europe, whose historic buildings have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. Pharmaceutical, biotech and medical technology firms have grown up around the university and its hospitals. For freight, the city’s other strength is its position: on the A1 halfway between Lisbon and Porto, within an hour of the Bairrada wine region, the paper industry on the coast and the region’s ceramics workshops.
Pharmaceuticals: temperature first
Coimbra produces medicines, a large share of them for export, and biotech companies operate nearby, for example in Cantanhede. These shipments follow stricter rules than ordinary freight. Medicines usually travel at 15–25 °C, some products chilled at 2–8 °C, and we arrange temperature-controlled trailers or vans for both. Temperature is logged throughout the journey and the record is handed over with the documents. Shippers generally require a carrier that meets good distribution practice standards and a closed vehicle without reloading. Lab samples and small consignments go by express van with two drivers. Temperature control also means heating: the route crosses the Spanish plateau around Salamanca and Burgos, which is hot in summer and freezing in winter, so in cold months the unit keeps medicines and wine from freezing. Please tell us the temperature range, the type of goods and any ADR classification (some lab chemicals and solvents) when you ask for a quote.
What else the region ships
- Bairrada wine – north of Coimbra around Anadia and Mealhada, a region known in Portugal for sparkling wine and reds from the baga grape. Sparkling wine is under pressure and dislikes heat, so from spring to autumn it travels temperature-controlled. Wine is an excise product and needs the appropriate accompanying document.
- Paper – the port town of Figueira da Foz, about 45 km west, is one of the centres of Portugal’s pulp and paper industry. Palletised paper is dense, so trucks reach their weight limit before they are full, and reels must be secured against shifting.
- Ceramics – from tableware to hand-painted faience in Condeixa.
- Bicycle components made in Coimbra itself, linked to the cycle industry around Águeda described on our Aveiro page.
Route and transit times
From Coimbra the IP3 leads to Viseu and the A25 motorway, which runs to the Spanish border at Vilar Formoso / Fuentes de Oñoro. The truck continues via Salamanca, Valladolid and Burgos to Irun, through France and Germany and via Rozvadov into Czechia – roughly 2,550–2,600 km. A full truck, including a temperature-controlled one, takes 5–6 working days; an express van with two drivers about 2–3 days; groupage pallets of wine or ceramics 6–9 working days. France and Germany have weekend and holiday truck bans, and tolls apply in every country on the route. Paper and larger pharmaceutical orders go best as a full truck.
Combining loads along the A1
Coimbra sits on Portugal’s main north–south axis, about 60 km from Aveiro and roughly 70 km from Leiria with its glass and mould-making industry. If you buy from several suppliers in central Portugal, we combine collections in Coimbra, Aveiro and Leiria into one truck that runs to Czechia without reloading.
Loading in Coimbra, exports from Czechia
The historic upper town around the university has steep, narrow lanes reachable only by van. Manufacturers and warehouses are in industrial zones on the city edge near the A1. Southbound, we deliver laboratory and medical supplies, glass, packaging, chemicals and engineering products from Czechia. Ask your supplier to confirm the address, opening hours, dock, pallet count and dimensions, weight and, for medicines, the required temperature range. Documents: CMR and invoice or delivery note, the excise document for wine and the temperature record for pharmaceuticals. Check the price in our freight calculator.
