Lisbon – street in the city centre

A gateway rather than a factory town

Most of what leaves Lisbon for Central Europe was not made in the city itself. Lisbon has the largest port in southern Portugal, with container terminals on the Tagus, an international airport handling air cargo, and a long belt of warehouses and logistics parks along the A1 motorway north of the city, around Alverca, Carregado and Azambuja. This corridor supplies the whole country, and it is where most loads for Czechia are actually collected.

In practice, a pick-up address in “Lisbon” is often 30–50 km outside the city. Please give us the exact location before we quote: a warehouse on the A1 and a shop in the old town need very different vehicles.

Typical cargo for Czech buyers

  • goods arriving in sea containers and continuing by road to Central Europe
  • wine and olive oil from Alentejo, Setúbal and the Lisbon wine region, often consolidated in warehouses near the capital
  • paper and pulp products from the Setúbal peninsula across the river
  • automotive parts from suppliers around Palmela
  • food: canned fish, rice from the Tagus and Sado valleys, fruit from the Oeste region
  • cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods from distribution centres

Southbound, we deliver machinery, automotive parts, glass, plastics, packaging and consumer goods to Lisbon-area warehouses.

Leaving Lisbon: two corridors

Trucks either head east on the A2 and A6 via Évora to the border at Elvas / Badajoz and on along the A-5 to Madrid, continuing via Burgos to Irun or via Zaragoza and Barcelona to La Jonquera; or they take the A1 north and cut across via Castelo Branco and Guarda to Vilar Formoso, the same crossing used by traffic from Porto. The choice depends on where the vehicle picks up extra cargo in Spain or France.

The distance to Prague is roughly 2,700 km. At 600–700 km per driver per day, a full truck normally arrives in about 5 working days; loads collected on a Friday take longer because of weekend truck bans in France and Germany. More detail is on our Prague – Lisbon route page.

Cargo from the port: customs first

If goods reached Lisbon from outside the EU, customs must be settled before they move on. They are either cleared in Portugal or travel under a transit document and are cleared in Czechia. The carrier collecting at the terminal needs to know which document applies, otherwise the load will not be released. Sea containers are rarely trucked all the way to Czechia; the cargo is usually transferred into a trailer at or near the port so the box does not have to come back empty across Europe.

Choosing the service

For a few pallets from an A1 warehouse, pallet groupage takes about 6–10 working days. A full container’s worth of goods goes as a full truck in about 5 working days. Wine, oil and food in summer travel in temperature-controlled trailers, and urgent spare parts or samples by express van in 2–3 working days. Some cosmetics and chemical products fall under ADR rules, so ask the supplier for the safety data sheet in advance.

Loading tips for Lisbon

Large A1 warehouses work with booked time slots; without a booking reference a truck is often turned away. Ask your supplier to confirm the order or release number, opening hours, pallet count and dimensions, and weight. Semi-trailers cannot reach the historic centre: Baixa and Alfama have narrow, steep streets, access restrictions and a reduced-emissions zone, so we send a van. Two bridges link Lisbon to the Setúbal side and both are congested at rush hour, so we schedule south-bank collections outside peak times. Check the price in our freight calculator and book 3–4 working days ahead.
