Prague – Lisbon road freight and imports from Portugal

A long lane worth the distance
At approximately 2,700 km, Lisbon is the furthest destination we regularly serve by road from Prague. Even so, there is steady demand for imports from Portugal into Czechia and Slovakia, because the country produces goods that are hard to source elsewhere in Europe in the same quality. We arrange this traffic as a forwarder using vetted contract carriers, from single pallets to full trucks.
Goods we bring in from Portugal
- Cork – stoppers, cork boards, flooring and insulation granulate. Light and bulky, so pallet count and height matter more than weight.
- Wine from Alentejo, Setúbal and the Lisbon region, plus port and Douro wines often consolidated near Porto.
- Ceramic tiles, including hand-painted azulejos and stoneware from the Leiria and Aveiro area – heavy cargo where weight limits come first.
- Fruit and vegetables – pears from the Oeste region, oranges from the Algarve, tomato paste from Ribatejo.
- Textiles and footwear from the north, olive oil, canned fish, paper and marble from Estremoz.
Groupage first, full truck when it pays
Most Portuguese imports into the Czech Republic are a few pallets: tile samples, a pallet of wine for a wine shop, cork boards for a contractor. Paying for a whole truck over 2,700 km rarely makes sense, so we add such shipments to pallet groupage, where goods from several suppliers are consolidated and travel together. Transit is longer, but the cost per pallet is much lower. Full trucks are the right choice for regular volumes, bulky cork or chilled fruit that should not be transhipped.
| Service | Typical use | Transit time |
|---|---|---|
| Pallet groupage | 1–8 pallets | usually 6–10 working days |
| Full truck, one driver | full load, standard deadline | 4–5 working days |
| Full truck, two drivers | urgent or high-value goods | about 3 working days |
| Temperature-controlled | fruit, food, wine in summer | 4–5 working days |
Route through Spain and France
The usual route runs through Germany into France, past Bordeaux to the Irún / Hendaye crossing, then via Burgos and Salamanca to Vilar Formoso and on to Lisbon. A southern option via Lyon, Barcelona and Madrid is used when there is a stop in southern France or Spain. Every country on the way is in the EU, so there are no customs formalities. A single driver covers roughly 600–700 km a day and must take a weekly rest, so loading early in the week avoids a truck sitting out the weekend in France.
Collection around Lisbon
Warehouses and distribution centres line the A1 motorway north of the city, around Alverca, Carregado and Azambuja, with more on the south bank of the Tagus towards Setúbal. Sea freight is released at the ports of Lisbon, Setúbal or Sines, where container release dates and terminal slots apply. Wineries and cork producers in Alentejo are often off the main roads and without docks, so we arrange side loading or a tail-lift vehicle.
Rules, tolls and documents
France bans trucks over 7.5 tonnes from Saturday evening to Sunday evening and on public holidays, Germany on Sundays, and Spain restricts traffic on selected roads during peak travel days. Some Portuguese motorways are tolled electronically only, without toll booths; all tolls are included in the quote. You need a CMR note and an invoice or delivery note, plus a temperature record for chilled goods. Wine is an excise product and travels with an e-AD or a simplified accompanying document depending on the supplier's excise status.
Ask the supplier for the warehouse address, opening hours (many close over lunch), pallet count, dimensions, weight and the loading reference, and send your enquiry a few days before the required date. Imports from northern Portugal are covered on our Porto page, and the freight calculator gives an indicative price.

No. Groupage, where goods from several suppliers are consolidated, is far more economical. A full truck suits full loads or chilled goods.
No. Portugal and all transit countries are EU members. A CMR and invoice are enough; wine also needs an excise document.
Yes, at Lisbon, Setúbal or Sines. We need the release date and the terminal time slot.
