Where Aveiro sits on the map

Aveiro lies on the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, roughly halfway between Porto and Coimbra, and it is where the A25 motorway begins. The A25 runs via Viseu and Guarda straight to the Spanish border at Vilar Formoso / Fuentes de Oñoro, about 200 km away, making it the most direct link from Portugal’s coast to Spain. A truck loaded in the morning in Aveiro or Águeda is in Spain by the evening. From there the route continues via Salamanca, Valladolid and Burgos to Irun and through France and Germany to Czechia – about 2,500 km in total.

A full truck typically arrives in 5 working days, groupage pallets in 6–9 working days. France bans heavy trucks from Saturday evening to Sunday evening and on public holidays, Germany on Sundays, holidays and summer Saturdays on selected motorways. Tolls apply in every country on the route, in Portugal often electronically.

Bicycles from Águeda

Portugal is one of Europe’s biggest bicycle producers, and the heart of the industry is Águeda, about 20 km south-east of Aveiro. A cluster of assembly plants and makers of frames, wheels, rims and components grew there out of earlier moped and motorcycle production. Bicycles bring specific questions:

• Volume, not weight – bikes ship in cartons with parts partly dismantled, so trailers fill by space; we quote by pallet count and height.
• Season – Czech retailers want stock before spring, so February to April is peak time; book early.
• E-bikes and batteries – separately packed lithium batteries fall under ADR and need an authorised carrier; for bikes with fitted batteries the supplier must state the transport conditions in the documents.

Metal office furniture is also made around Águeda and combines well with bicycles in one trailer.

The rest of the region

• porcelain and tableware from Ílhavo – fragile, needs firm packing and no foreign goods stacked on top
• bathroom and kitchen taps from Albergaria-a-Velha – small, heavy cartons, so watch pallet weights
• water heaters and engine components from Cacia – deliveries to plants in booked slots
• chemicals from the Estarreja industrial complex – often ADR
• artificial turf and textile floor coverings from Ovar – rolls, loaded from the side or top
• dried salt cod from Ílhavo, sea salt and the local egg-yolk sweets ovos moles – food, temperature-controlled in summer

Chemicals go only with carriers authorised for ADR transport; we need UN numbers and safety data sheets. Damage to porcelain almost always happens during reloading, so mark pallets as fragile and non-stackable and note any damage on the CMR in the driver’s presence. Porcelain usually travels in small quantities, ideal for pallet groupage.

Port and rail

The seaport of Aveiro at the mouth of the lagoon handles mainly bulk and general cargo and has its own rail link. For Czech customers it matters indirectly, bringing in raw materials for local industry; finished products from the region travel to Central Europe by road.

Deliveries from Czechia and booking tips

Southbound, we carry bicycle components, steel and aluminium semi-finished products, plastics, electronics for water heaters and engineering goods. Large plants in Cacia and Águeda only accept pre-notified deliveries in time slots, so we need the order number and unloading point. For imports, ask your supplier to confirm the address, opening hours, dock availability, pallet count, dimensions and weight.
