Not a factory town, but a commodity region

Évora itself is an administrative and university city with a walled historic centre. The freight comes from the surrounding Alentejo, which supplies Europe with raw materials and food found in few other places at this scale:

  • Cork – raw bark, boards, stoppers and granulate. Portugal is the world's largest cork producer, and the Alentejo is its main growing area.
  • Olive oil from groves around Évora and further south.
  • Wine from the areas around Évora and Reguengos de Monsaraz.
  • Marble from the quarries of Estremoz, Borba and Vila Viçosa.
  • Aerospace parts from the industrial park by Évora airport.
  • Cheese and cured pork products, which travel chilled.

Heavy and light: marble and cork in practice

These two Alentejo staples sit at opposite ends of the loading problem. Marble, quarried about 50 km north-east of Évora between Estremoz, Borba and Vila Viçosa, hits the weight limit long before the trailer is full. Slabs travel on A-frames secured with straps and are loaded by crane or forklift from the side or top, so we need the exact weight of every item and to know what lifting equipment the quarry or workshop has. The quarries sit right on the A6 towards the border, so a marble pick-up fits neatly into the route.

Cork is the reverse: very light, so the trailer fills by volume. For a quote we need pallet dimensions and height rather than weight. Olive oil is dense, so a few pallets of oil and a few of cork complement each other well in pallet groupage. Oil in cans or bottles is temperature-sensitive – it can cloud in winter and overheat in summer – so larger volumes go in a temperature-controlled trailer. Wine needs the excise accompanying document and, in summer, controlled temperature too.

Aerospace parts need gentle handling

An aeronautics industrial park near Évora airport produces metallic and composite aircraft structures and precision-machined components. Czechia has its own aviation industry, so parts, tooling and materials move both ways. For these shipments we use air-suspension vehicles and carriers used to crates with shock and tilt indicators. We need crate dimensions and weights in advance, since large parts may not fit through side doors and must be loaded from the top or rear. If production is waiting, an express van or a two-driver crew is the answer.

Route via Caia / Badajoz

Évora lies on the A6 from Lisbon to the Caia / Badajoz border crossing, about 100 km away. In Spain trucks continue either via Madrid or north via Salamanca and Burgos to Irun, then through France and Germany to Rozvadov. Prague is roughly 2,700 km away. A full truck with one driver usually arrives in about 5 working days, groupage in 6–10. France and Germany ban heavy trucks at weekends and on holidays, Spain restricts them on holidays, and tolls apply throughout. See also transport to Spain and the Prague – Lisbon route.

Loading in and around Évora

The historic centre inside the medieval walls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its narrow streets are no place for a truck. Industrial and warehouse zones on the edge of town are easy to reach; anything from a small shop or workshop inside the walls is collected by van. Rural wineries and olive mills often have no dock, so we send a vehicle with a tail lift. No customs within the EU: a CMR and an invoice or delivery note, plus excise paperwork for wine.
