Freight forwarding Koper – transport from the port of Koper to Czechia
Road freight from the port of Koper to the Czech Republic: containers, reefer fruit, cars and timber. Route via Ljubljana and Graz, customs, T1 and timing.
Central Europe's nearest sea gate
Koper lies on the Slovenian coast of Istria, only about 20 km south of Trieste. The town itself is small, with roughly 26,000 inhabitants and official bilingual status (Capodistria in Italian), but its port is one of the most important in the Adriatic. In 2024 it handled about 1.1 million TEU and 23 million tonnes of cargo. Austria is its largest foreign market, followed by countries such as Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The port also has free-zone status, so goods from outside the EU can be stored there without customs clearance.
Out of twelve specialised terminals, four matter most to Czech importers and exporters:
- the container terminal: consumer goods, electronics, textiles, furniture and parts from Asia, mostly via the Suez Canal,
- the fruit terminal with cold stores: bananas, citrus and other produce in reefer containers,
- the car terminal, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, for new vehicles moving inland and for export,
- the timber terminal, used to ship sawn timber from Central Europe to Mediterranean markets.
Route via Ljubljana and Graz
From Koper the A1 motorway runs via Ljubljana and Maribor to the Šentilj/Spielfeld border. In Austria trucks follow the A9 to Graz and then either the A2 to Vienna and on to Brno via Mikulov, or the A9 over the Pyhrn to Linz and into Bohemia. Brno is about 650 km away, Prague around 780 km. A full load usually reaches Brno within one working day and Prague in two. Regular container trains also run from Koper to the Czech Republic.
Slovenia and Austria both charge a distance-based electronic toll for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and ban heavy trucks at weekends and on public holidays, with extra Saturday restrictions in Slovenia during summer. Austria also restricts trucks at night. A container collected on Friday afternoon therefore usually reaches the consignee on Monday.
Customs: clear in Koper or in Czechia?
Cargo arriving from outside the EU must go through import clearance. You can either release it into free circulation in Koper, after which it travels to Czechia as an ordinary EU shipment, or send it under T1 transit and clear it at a Czech customs office with your own Czech broker. Transit requires a guarantee and delivery to the destination office within the set deadline. Either way, we need the bill of lading number, the shipping line release and the name of whoever handles customs.
Fruit, cars and timber
Fruit and vegetables arrive in reefer containers, and the cold chain must not break. We use a tractor with a generator set or transfer the goods into a refrigerated trailer at the port. Bananas travel at a precise temperature so they do not ripen en route, and consignees usually want a temperature log for the whole trip. Phytosanitary inspection takes place in the port, so the collection date also depends on its outcome.
New cars leave the port on car transporters carrying roughly eight to ten vehicles, depending on size. Cars from outside the EU also need customs clearance and registration papers. Sawn timber from Czechia goes to Koper on curtainsiders with side loading; the terminal works with time slots, and the shipper must ensure the wood meets treatment rules of the destination country.
Checklist before booking
- container and bill of lading numbers and the free-time deadline at the terminal,
- cargo weight, because road limits are stricter than sea limits,
- set temperature and ventilation for reefers,
- the depot for returning the empty container.
For several consignees in Czechia we can devan the container in the port and send the pallets by groupage. Full containers and trailers travel as a full truckload without transhipment. For the nearby Italian port see our Trieste page, and get a price in the calculator.
