Maribor is also a Slovenian crossroads. The A1 continues to Ljubljana and the coast, the A5 runs east to the Hungarian border, and the road via Ptuj leads south to Croatia, with Zagreb about 120 km away. Larger orders can therefore combine a Maribor collection with stops in Hungary, Croatia or Graz, which lies only about 65 km to the north.

From textiles to automotive and metals

Maribor's first textile mills opened in 1922, and before the Second World War the city held around half of Slovenia's textile capacity. After the war they merged into Yugoslavia's largest textile company, earning Maribor the nickname "Yugoslav Manchester"; the industry declined towards the end of the 20th century. The other pillar was truck and engine production in the Tezno district in the south-east. After 1990 the former factory land was turned into a business and production zone with automotive suppliers, metalworking firms and warehouses.

Typical loads from Maribor and its surroundings to the Czech Republic:

  • automotive and engineering components;
  • metal castings, pressings and fabricated structures;
  • aluminium and semi-finished aluminium products from the smelter at nearby Kidričevo;
  • timber and wood products from the forested Pohorje hills rising just behind the city;
  • wine and other food from Slovenian Styria.

Czech exports to Maribor include machine parts, building materials, glass, packaging, food and beer.

Vehicle choice here is driven by weight rather than volume: aluminium and steel bundles reach the legal payload long before the deck is full. Line-side parts are the opposite – light but urgent – and an express van covers Maribor to Brno in a matter of hours.

Wine from the home of the world's oldest vine

In the Lent quarter on the Drava embankment grows a vine more than 400 years old, listed by Guinness World Records as the oldest vine in the world still bearing fruit. The Styrian wine region around Maribor, including the Slovenske gorice hills, is known mainly for white wines. When importing it, keep in mind:

  • wine travels in temperature-controlled trucks in summer and winter alike;
  • small wineries rarely have a loading dock, so we send a vehicle with a tail lift;
  • several wineries can be combined in one pallet groupage run;
  • excise paperwork for alcohol in the Czech Republic should be ready before departure.

Road rules in Slovenia and Austria

Trucks over 3.5 t pay an electronic distance-based toll on Slovenian motorways and need an on-board unit. Vehicles over 7.5 t may not drive in Slovenia on Sundays and public holidays from 08:00 to 22:00. In Austria the weekend ban runs from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00, and at night only low-noise trucks may run. A Friday collection in Maribor must therefore leave Austria by Saturday afternoon, otherwise delivery slips to Monday. The Vienna route has no mountain passes and suits winter; the Pyhrn route is shorter but crosses mountains and has tunnel tolls.

Before collection

  • Suppliers in the production zone work with time slots; confirm the slot and reference number.
  • For aluminium and metal products, give the weight and bundle dimensions so the load can be distributed correctly.
  • Slovenia is in the EU: a CMR note and an invoice or delivery note are enough.

Full loads are handled as full truckload transport; for a price, use the calculator.
