Freight forwarding Leiria – moulds and glass to the Czech Republic
Road freight between Leiria, Marinha Grande and the Czech Republic: injection moulds, glass, ceramics and plastics. Heavy pieces, pallets and full trucks.
Why Leiria matters to Czech plastics producers
Portugal has two mould-making clusters: Oliveira de Azeméis in the north and Marinha Grande, a short drive west of Leiria. Most of their output is exported, and the automotive industry is by far the biggest customer, followed by packaging, household appliances and medical devices. Central Europe, and Czechia in particular, is full of injection moulding plants supplying the car industry, so finished moulds, inserts and spare mould components regularly travel from Leiria to Czech factories.
The mould industry grew out of the local glassmaking tradition, which dates back to the 18th century. Today the district still produces glass containers and table and decorative glass, along with ceramics (traditionally around Caldas da Rainha and Alcobaça), cement, wood and furniture, and a wide range of plastic packaging and technical parts.
Shipping a mould: what we need to know
A steel mould the size of a washing machine can weigh several tonnes, concentrated on a small footprint. That changes how it is transported:
- Exact weight and dimensions of every piece, so the carrier can position the load over the axles and secure it properly.
- How it will be loaded: overhead crane or forklift. Large moulds are loaded from the top or the side, so we book a trailer with a sliding roof or a curtain that opens fully.
- Packaging: wooden skids or a crate, corrosion protection and wrapping, because several days across Spain and France mean changing humidity in the trailer.
- The heaviest moulds for large body or bumper parts can exceed the payload of a standard trailer and need a special vehicle and an abnormal-load permit.
Small moulds and components travel well by pallet groupage, provided they are bolted to the pallet or crated. When a production launch is waiting, or a mould returns for modification after trials, an express van with two drivers is much faster.
Route and transit time
Leiria sits on the A1 motorway between Lisbon and Porto, with the A8 and A17 serving the coast and Marinha Grande. Trucks heading for Central Europe usually take the A1 north and the A25 via Viseu and Guarda to the border at Vilar Formoso / Fuentes de Oñoro, then continue via Salamanca, Burgos and Irun into France and through Germany to the Czech border at Rozvadov. The distance to Prague is roughly 2,700 km, about 200 km more to Brno.
With one driver covering 600–700 km a day, a full truck typically reaches Czechia in about 5 working days; groupage pallets take 6–9 working days. Remember the weekend and holiday driving bans for heavy trucks in France and Germany and the holiday restrictions in Spain. Tolls apply in Portugal, France, Germany and on Spanish toll sections. Everything stays within the EU, so no customs: a CMR consignment note and an invoice or delivery note are enough.
Matching the service to the goods
| Goods | Best option | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Large mould or several moulds | full truck or special vehicle | exact weight, crane loading, securing |
| Inserts, mould components | groupage or express van | crate or firm fixing to the pallet |
| Glass containers, glassware | full truck from about 12–15 pallets | non-stackable pallets, layer protection |
| Ceramics, plastic products | pallet groupage | pallet count, size and weight |
For glass and ceramics, packaging is everything: cartons with dividers, wrapped pallets and a clear label if the pallet must not be stacked. A non-stackable pallet takes its full height in a groupage trailer, which we need to know when quoting.
Loads heading the other way
From Czechia, the region receives plastic granulates and semi-finished products, steel blocks and standard parts for toolmakers, cutting tools, machine parts, glass and packaging. We try to pair an outbound load to Portugal with a return load of moulds or glass from the Leiria area.
Before collection, ask the supplier to confirm a loading dock, crane or forklift capacity, opening hours and the weight of each piece. Toolmakers often finish a mould at the last minute, so we reconfirm the collection the day before. Get a price for your shipment in the calculator.

A full truck with one driver usually arrives in about 5 working days; groupage pallets take 6–9 working days. A two-driver express is faster.
Yes. Send us the exact weight and dimensions and tell us how it is loaded. We then book a top- or side-loading trailer, or a special vehicle for the heaviest pieces.
On wooden skids or in a crate, protected against corrosion and wrapped. Smaller components must be bolted firmly to the pallet.
Yes, glass containers, glassware and ceramics. Tell us whether the pallets can be stacked.
A1 and A25 via Viseu to Vilar Formoso, then across Spain, France and Germany to Rozvadov – roughly 2,700 km to Prague.
No, this is intra-EU transport. A CMR note and an invoice or delivery note are sufficient.
