A city of transport firsts

Mannheim has an unusual place in transport history. Karl Drais demonstrated his running machine, the forerunner of the bicycle, here in 1817. Less than seventy years later the first petrol-engined car was built in the city, and in 1888 the first long-distance car journey started here. Industry has stayed: tractors, buses, engines, electrical equipment and power-generation technology are made here, while across the Rhine in Ludwigshafen stands one of the largest chemical complexes in the world.

For Czech buyers that means a steady flow of:

  • chemical raw materials, plastic granulate, paints and coatings,
  • tractors, farm machinery and their spare parts,
  • switchgear and electrical components for energy projects,
  • goods from containers unloaded at the port,
  • wine from the nearby Palatinate and food from regional warehouses.

Czech suppliers ship metal and plastic parts, glass, paper, furniture and building materials in return.

One motorway from the border

After the Rozvadov / Waidhaus crossing, a truck joins the A6 and stays on it all the way, passing Nuremberg, Heilbronn and Walldorf to the Mannheim interchange. From Prague that is about 500 km, a single driving day; from Brno roughly 700 km with delivery on the second working day. The Heilbronn area is often congested, partly due to motorway widening works, so we recommend a generous unloading window, especially on Friday afternoons. More about the first half of the trip is on our Prague – Nuremberg route page.

Germany's largest inland port by area

Spread over more than 11 km² on the Rhine and Neckar, Mannheim's port is the largest inland harbour in Germany by surface area. It is trimodal, with several container terminals and overnight rail services, and handles grain, feed, coal, gravel, cement, fruit and, in tank farms, mineral and edible oils. The city also has one of Germany's biggest rail marshalling yards. Containers that came up the Rhine from Rotterdam or Antwerp are often collected here by truck for the final leg to Czechia; we need the container number, terminal and the shipping line's release. Remember that the empty box usually has to be returned to a depot named by the line within a limited free period, so plan unloading promptly.

Three states, three holiday calendars

The Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region spans Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. Mannheim keeps Epiphany on 6 January, Ludwigshafen and the Hessian towns to the north do not; All Saints' Day is a holiday in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen but not in Hesse. If you load on one bank of the Rhine and unload on the other, check both calendars. Sundays and public holidays bring a ban on trucks over 7.5 t; toll applies above 3.5 t.

Chemicals, machines and the grid-plan centre

Chemical consignments travel as ADR transport with carriers that know the entry rules of large chemical sites, including driver safety briefings. Tractors and farm machines need a low-loader or a trailer with ramps, so send dimensions and weight in advance.

The city centre is laid out as a grid of blocks known as Quadrate. Instead of street names, addresses use a letter and number, such as N 7 or Q 6, followed by the house number. Give the block, house number and delivery entrance, or the driver may circle the centre needlessly. Most warehouses and plants, however, sit in the port, the north of the city and near motorway junctions. For a rate, try our calculator.
