Hungary's “Steel City”

With roughly 143,000 inhabitants, Miskolc is Hungary's fourth-largest city and has long been called the Steel City. Its Diósgyőr district hosted large ironworks for decades, and the city grew to over 200,000 people in the 20th century. After the steel crisis of the 1990s, smaller manufacturers and international companies replaced the big state firms. Today the area produces machine parts, power tools, metal goods and medical supplies, including single-use syringes.

The local university continues the tradition of the mining academy founded in the 18th century in Banská Štiavnica, now in Slovakia, and trains engineers in metallurgy, materials and mechanical engineering.

The chemical belt around Miskolc

For freight, the surroundings matter more than the city itself. About 20 km north-west, Kazincbarcika has a large chemical plant producing PVC and isocyanates used in polyurethane foams. Around 40 km south-east, Tiszaújváros hosts a petrochemical complex making polyethylene and polypropylene pellets. Czech manufacturers of plastic parts, film, pipes and insulation buy these raw materials.

• Polymer pellets in bags on pallets or in big bags are standard, non-hazardous cargo.
• PVC powder often travels in bulk in silo trailers.
• Liquid chemicals and isocyanates fall under ADR and move in tankers or IBCs with licensed carriers.

Wine and stone from the hills

The Tokaj wine region starts about 50 km east of Miskolc and ships sweet and dry white wines. From spring to autumn, wine is best moved in temperature-controlled trucks so the bottles do not overheat. The limestone Bükk hills west of the city supply stone and building raw materials, and the lowlands provide farm produce. Czech exporters send machinery, castings, packaging, building materials, glass and food to the Miskolc area.

Two ways to drive there

From Brno, the all-motorway route runs via the D2, Bratislava and Rajka, then the M1, the M0 ring road around Budapest, the M3 and the M30: about 510 km. Prague adds the D1 to Brno, roughly 720 km in total. More detail is on our Brno – Budapest route page.

From Ostrava the northern option through Slovakia is shorter, about 450 km: Žilina, the D1 via Poprad to Košice, the R4 expressway to the Milhosť/Tornyosnémeti border and the M30 straight into Miskolc. The M30 section between Miskolc and the border opened in 2021, was closed for a long time for repairs and reopened at the end of 2025.

A full truck from Miskolc reaches Brno or Ostrava within one working day and Prague usually the next day. Pallet groupage takes three to four working days.

Power tools and medical supplies

Finished goods from Miskolc plants need a different approach. Power tools carry a high value per pallet, so we use box bodies or sealed trailers, direct runs and guarded parking during mandatory breaks. Syringes and other medical supplies are light and bulky; cartons must stay dry and uncrushed, which usually means pallets cannot be stacked. Confirm pallet heights and stackability in advance, as they decide how much fits on one truck.

Rules of the road and loading tips

Hungary charges distance-based electronic tolls for trucks over 3.5 t and bans vehicles over 7.5 t at weekends and on public holidays, with the summer ban starting on Saturday afternoon. Slovakia bans heavy trucks on Sundays and holidays, so on the northern route the truck must clear both countries before the bans begin. See also transport to Hungary.
