Small loads from many workshops

A typical import from Porto is not a full truck from one warehouse but a few pallets of garments from one workshop and some cartons of shoes from another. Most loading happens directly at the manufacturer: the Ave valley around Braga and Guimarães is the traditional centre of textile and clothing production, Felgueiras and São João da Madeira are full of shoe factories, and cork is processed south of Porto around Santa Maria da Feira.

That makes pallet groupage the natural choice. Smaller workshops often have no dock and load by hand or pallet truck from the side, so we send a vehicle with a tail lift. If you buy from several manufacturers in the region, we can combine the collections; from roughly 12–15 pallets a full truck running direct without reloading becomes the better option.

What northern Portugal supplies

  • clothing, knitwear, towels and home textiles
  • footwear and leather goods
  • cork stoppers, cork flooring, insulation and décor
  • furniture from Paços de Ferreira and Paredes
  • Douro wines, port and vinho verde from Minho
  • metal and plastic parts, packaging and ceramics

Cork is light and bulky: the trailer fills by volume long before it reaches its weight limit, so for a quote we need pallet dimensions and height, not just weight. Garment cartons should be tightly wrapped on the pallet, otherwise they crush and open during cross-docking. Loose-loaded cartons are possible but slow down loading and unloading considerably.

Route via Vilar Formoso

From Porto, trucks take the A25 via Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda to the Spanish border at Vilar Formoso / Fuentes de Oñoro, then cross Spain via Salamanca, Valladolid and Burgos to Irun, continue through France past Bordeaux and Paris into Germany and reach Czechia via Nuremberg and Rozvadov – about 2,600 km. A single driver covers 600–700 km a day, so a full truck usually arrives in 5–6 working days. Groupage pallets are first consolidated at a Portuguese hub and typically take 6–9 working days. Wine, excise and tolls

Douro wine and port are frequent food imports. There is no customs duty between EU states, but wine is an excise product: the supplier issues an electronic accompanying document, or a simplified one if duty has already been paid, and you need to agree beforehand who handles excise in Czechia. In summer, we recommend a temperature-controlled trailer, as a curtain-sider gets very hot crossing Spain.

Portugal charges motorway tolls, and some motorways are electronic-only with no toll booths, so the carrier needs the right on-board unit or registration. Tolls follow in France, Germany and on some Spanish sections. France bans heavy trucks from Saturday evening to Sunday evening and on holidays, Germany on Sundays, holidays and summer Saturdays on selected motorways, and Spain has its own holiday and summer restrictions. Documents: CMR, invoice or delivery note, plus the excise document for wine. See the price in our freight calculator.

Exports to Porto and booking tips

Southbound, we carry textile and footwear machinery, spare parts, glass, textile chemicals and building materials to northern Portugal. When booking an import, ask your supplier to confirm the exact workshop address, opening hours (many close for a long lunch break), dock availability, pallet count and dimensions, and weight. Book at least 3 working days ahead, and note that some Portuguese manufacturers close for company holidays in August.
