A port town, not a manufacturing city

Sines has a deep-water Atlantic port able to handle the largest ocean-going ships. Alongside the container terminal there are terminals for liquid bulk, LNG and dry bulk and a multipurpose terminal, with a refinery and a petrochemical complex behind the port. Road freight from Sines to Central Europe therefore follows three specific flows rather than general local industry:

  • overseas cargo that arrived by container and continues by road,
  • polymer granulates and chemicals from the petrochemical complex,
  • fresh produce, mainly greenhouse berries from the Alentejo coast south of Sines around Odemira.

Customs first: goods from outside the EU

Container cargo from the Americas, Africa or Asia is not yet in free circulation when it lands at Sines. There are two ways forward. It can be cleared in Portugal and then travel to Czechia as ordinary EU goods. Or it can move under T1 transit, secured by a guarantee, and be cleared at a customs office in Czechia, where the driver presents the transit document. The decision must be made before the container leaves the terminal, and you need an EORI number either way. Typical paperwork: bill of lading or release note, commercial invoice, packing list, CMR and the transit or import declaration.

Destuff at the port or haul the box?

Most shipments are unpacked in the logistics area near the port and reloaded as pallets onto a curtainsider – practical when the container holds goods for several consignees or when only part of it goes to Czechia, which can then travel by pallet groupage. Hauling the whole container on a chassis to Czechia is an option for loose-loaded or sensitive cargo that should not be handled twice, but then the empty return and the shipping line's free-time limits must be planned. In both cases we need the release from the shipping line and terminal, the reference number and a booked pick-up slot.

Granulates and chemicals

Polymers from the petrochemical complex travel as granulate in big bags or sacks on pallets to plastics processors. It is heavy, uniform cargo that suits a full truck; pallets must be well wrapped so the sacks do not shift. Chemicals classified as dangerous goods go with carriers licensed for ADR transport; we need the safety data sheet and UN numbers. Industrial sites have strict access rules: personal protective equipment, a safety briefing and fixed loading times.

Berries from the coast

Raspberries, blueberries and other berries grown under cover on the southern Alentejo coast are exported across Europe. They are perishable and need an unbroken cold chain with a temperature record, ideally without reloading. Over a distance of nearly 2,900 km to Prague, a two-driver crew cutting the trip to about 3 days is usually worth it.

Practical points at the terminal

The driver needs the booked pick-up slot and container number to enter the terminal. We check the seal and the box condition on collection and record any damage immediately. If customs select the container for inspection, release is delayed, so build in a buffer for goods with fixed delivery dates. In the other direction, we bring machine parts, valves, pumps and maintenance spares from Czechia to the Sines industrial zone, usually by express or groupage.

Route and timing

From Sines, trucks head inland to the A2, then take the A6 via Évora to the Caia / Badajoz border and continue through Madrid and France, or go north past Lisbon to Vilar Formoso. A full truck with one driver takes about 5–6 working days, groupage 7–10 working days. France and Germany have weekend and holiday bans on heavy trucks, and tolls apply in every country en route.
