Freight forwarding Toruń – transport to and from the Czech Republic
Freight forwarding Toruń: electricity meters, electronics, automation and sweets from Toruń to Czechia via the A1, about 440 km from Ostrava. FTL or pallets.
One motorway from the Czech border
Toruń (German: Thorn) lies on the Vistula in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, roughly halfway between Warsaw and Gdańsk. The A1 motorway runs from the Gorzyczki – Věřňovice crossing via Katowice and Łódź to Toruń and on to the Baltic, so trucks from Czechia stay on one motorway almost the whole way and leave it at the Toruń Południe junction, where it briefly shares its alignment with the S10 expressway to Bydgoszcz. Ostrava is about 440 km away and Brno about 610 km; from Prague the route via Wrocław and Poznań, about 630 km, is usually shorter. With one driver, expect same-day or next-morning delivery to Ostrava and next working day to Brno or Prague.
Meters, displays and automation
Toruń's main industrial area lies just north of the city in Łysomice, a subzone of the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone. Mostly Japanese electronics makers began building plants there from 2006, and today the zone hosts electronics, industrial automation, automotive, logistics, food processing and precision technology firms. Neighbouring Ostaszewo produces electricity meters, including smart meters, switchgear and grid automation systems. In the past the city's largest plant made polyester fibres and employed about 8,000 people; little of it remains, but chemical and plastics know-how has stayed.
- electricity meters, smart meters, switchgear and circuit breakers,
- electronic components, displays and sub-assemblies,
- industrial automation and control equipment,
- automotive parts from the Łysomice zone,
- gingerbread, biscuits and confectionery,
- goods from distribution warehouses along the A1.
Northbound we carry Czech engineering parts, glass, ceramics, construction chemicals, beverages and food. Bydgoszcz is only about 45 km away, so collections in both cities fit easily into one vehicle.
Electronics over a long distance
Meters and electronics are high-value per pallet and travel more than 400 km, so we use a closed box trailer sealed after loading, and drivers stop overnight only at secured parking. Components sensitive to electrostatic discharge must be packed accordingly by the shipper. Czech utilities and electrical wholesalers usually have fixed receiving windows, which we need to know before loading.
Gingerbread and a UNESCO old town
Nicolaus Copernicus was born here in 1473, and gingerbread has been baked in Toruń for centuries – the city even has a gingerbread museum. The medieval old town, a former Hanseatic member, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Two practical consequences follow. Demand for gingerbread and sweets peaks in autumn before Christmas, when capacity on this lane gets tighter, so book early. And chocolate-coated gingerbread does not like summer heat, so from May to September we use temperature-controlled vehicles. The narrow old-town streets are unsuitable for trucks; shops and cafés there are served by van.
River, rail and air
The Vistula divides the city, with the centre on the right bank. Two road bridges cross it in town, the second completed in 2013, and the A1 has its own bridge south of the city. Toruń is a rail junction with three main stations and lines to Warsaw, Bydgoszcz, Wrocław, Olsztyn and Malbork. The nearest airport with scheduled services is in Bydgoszcz, about 50 km away.
Bans, tolls and paperwork
Vehicles over 12 t may not drive on Polish public holidays, and during summer holidays also on Friday evenings, Saturday mornings and Sundays. The A1 from Toruń to Gdańsk is a separately tolled concession; other motorways and expressways use electronic tolls. No customs formalities apply between Poland and Czechia – a CMR note and invoice or delivery note suffice. Smaller volumes travel by pallet groupage; see also transport to Poland and the calculator.
