Why Trento matters for Central European freight

Trento (Trient in German, Tridentum in Latin) is the capital of the autonomous province of Trentino, a city of roughly 118,000 people set in the narrow Adige valley. The A22 motorway from the Brenner Pass to Modena runs straight along the river, with two exits, Trento Nord and Trento Sud, and most warehouses and production sites lie on the flat valley floor between them. For a truck coming from the Czech Republic, Trentino is the first Italian province after the descent from the Alps; for a load heading north, it is the last stop before the climb to the Brenner.

North of the centre, at Roncafort, the city has an inland intermodal terminal where trailers and containers are transferred to rail. The province is investing in it to shift freight off the Alpine motorway. For Czech consignees, however, a direct truck is still the usual choice.

Stone, apples and mountain sparkling wine

Trentino's exports are dominated by a few products, each with its own handling requirements:

  • Porphyry from the Val di Cembra and the area around Albiano: paving setts, slabs and kerbs. A trailer reaches its weight limit long before it is full, so we plan these loads by tonnage.
  • Apples from the Val di Non and Val di Sole, which carry a protected designation of origin. They travel in reefers; part of the harvest is even stored in underground chambers cut into dolomite rock and shipped months after picking.
  • Trentodoc, a bottle-fermented sparkling wine, plus red wine from the Piana Rotaliana plain north of the city.
  • Grappa and other spirits, which move under excise documents.
  • Timber from mountain forests, especially the Val di Fiemme, known for the resonance spruce used in musical instruments.
  • Cherries and soft fruit from the Valsugana in summer.

Southbound, Czech suppliers send fruit-processing and sawmill equipment, packaging, glass, metal products and construction chemicals. Because trucks deliver into the region regularly, return capacity from Trento is usually easy to find.

The Vaia storm and the timber trade

In October 2018 the Vaia storm flattened large areas of forest across north-eastern Italy, including Trentino. Much of the damaged wood was processed in sawmills north of the Alps, and timber has remained a characteristic northbound commodity ever since. For logs and sawn timber we arrange stake trailers or curtainsiders that load from the side, since small mountain sawmills rarely have a dock.

Crossing the Alps: route, timing and bottlenecks

From Trento the route follows the A22 past Bolzano to the Brenner Pass at 1,370 m, then the Austrian A13 to Innsbruck, the A12 to Kufstein and on through Bavaria. Prague is roughly 760 km away via Munich and the Rozvadov crossing; Brno about 780 km via Salzburg and Linz. At 600 to 700 km per driver per day, a full truck normally arrives on the second working day.

Distance is not the main variable here. Tyrol restricts night driving for heavy trucks, bans some goods categories from the Inn valley motorway, and on busy days meters trucks in blocks near Kufstein. The Lueg bridge on the A13 is also being rebuilt, with reduced lanes for an extended period. Our Innsbruck page covers the Tyrolean rules in more detail. In Italy, heavy trucks may not drive on Sundays and public holidays, and on some Saturdays in summer; the A22 is tolled by axle class.

Picking the right service

Stone and timber justify a full truck. A few pallets of wine or spirits are better sent as groupage pallets, which take longer but cost less. Apples and soft fruit need temperature control with a recorded log. If a production line is waiting for a spare part, an express van is faster because it is not subject to the same truck restrictions. Use our online calculator for an indicative quote.

Practical notes for collections

  • Give us the valley, not just the town: many wineries, orchards and quarries are reached by narrow mountain roads.
  • Confirm whether the site has a loading dock or loads by forklift from the side.
  • Book early in autumn, when the apple and grape harvests absorb most local reefer capacity.
  • A Friday afternoon collection usually means a Monday delivery because of weekend restrictions in Italy, Austria and Germany.
