Freight forwarding Trnava – transport to and from the Czech Republic
Road freight between Trnava and the Czech Republic: car parts for assembly lines, glass fibre, railway components and grain. Routes from Brno, delivery slots.
Little Rome with a big car plant
Thanks to the many churches within its walls, Trnava is nicknamed Little Rome. It was one of the first free royal towns in the Kingdom of Hungary and today has two universities. Hauliers, however, know the city of about 63,000 people for something else: a large car factory on its outskirts, one of Slovakia's biggest engineering employers. Suppliers, warehouses and cross-docks have grown up around it and along the D1 between Bratislava and Trnava.
The local economy is broader than cars. Glass fibre has been produced here since 1966, in what is the largest plant of the Slovak glass industry. Trnava also repairs and builds railway vehicles, and other firms make rubber and plastic anti-vibration parts and chassis systems for cars. Hlohovec, 20 km away, has pharmaceutical production, and the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant is about 15 km north-west of the city.
What moves between Trnava and Czechia
- stamped and welded body parts, rubber and plastic components and sub-assemblies for Czech automotive suppliers;
- glass fibre rolls and mats for insulation, composites and building materials;
- parts and bogies for railway vehicles;
- medicines and medical products from Hlohovec;
- wheat, maize and sugar beet from the Trnava uplands.
In the other direction, Czech plants supply castings, forgings, wiring harnesses, electronics, steel sheet, fasteners and packaging. It is all intra-EU and Schengen traffic, so no customs declarations are needed.
Working to the minute: slots and returnable racks
Deliveries to the car plant run on exact time slots, and a truck arriving late can hold up the assembly line. We therefore plan departures from Czechia with a buffer, watch traffic on the D1 near Bratislava and inform the consignee immediately if anything goes wrong. Urgent parts can travel by express van without any transhipment.
Components often travel in returnable steel racks and plastic totes. Empties go back to the supplier, and when we match that with another load the truck never runs empty. Glass fibre is the opposite of heavy steel: light and bulky, it fills a trailer by volume long before weight becomes an issue, so high-cube trailers are a good choice.
Fertile land and a sugar past
With its black soils, the Trnava upland is among the most fertile areas in Slovakia, growing wheat, maize, sunflower and sugar beet. In the 19th century the town grew partly thanks to a large sugar factory and malt house. Today this means seasonal grain loads in tipper trailers after harvest and spring deliveries of seed, fertiliser and farm machinery from Czechia. West of the city, the vineyards of the Little Carpathians begin.
Routes and transit times
The quickest route from Brno uses the D2 via Lanžhot/Kúty, skirts Bratislava and continues on the D1, roughly 180 km and under two and a half hours. A shorter road via Hodonín, Holíč and Senica (I/51) is about 150 km but runs through villages and is usually slower for heavy trucks. Prague is about 380 km away, so a load collected in Trnava in the morning arrives there the same evening. Trnava is also where the R1 expressway to Nitra and Banská Bystrica begins.
The D1 between Bratislava and Trnava is congested at peak times. Slovakia levies electronic tolls and bans heavy trucks on Sundays and holidays, plus summer Saturdays. For more on the capital region see our Bratislava page.
Before you book
- For line-side deliveries, give the slot number, unloading point and receiving contact.
- Agree how many empty racks should come back and where to.
- For glass fibre, send roll dimensions and pallet count; volume decides, not weight.
- Access to the nuclear power plant site is strictly controlled; driver names and plates must be registered in advance.
