Freight forwarding Guimarães – transport to and from Czechia
Road freight from Guimarães to the Czech Republic: cutlery, knives, kitchenware, bed and table linen. Route via the Marão tunnel, pallets and full trucks.

Heavy cartons and light bundles
Two trades stand out in Guimarães more than anywhere else in Portugal: cutlery and kitchen utensils, and linen and cotton home textiles. Hundreds of small family firms in the municipality’s parishes make them, and goldsmithing also has a long tradition here. For freight, the interesting point is that the two main products are opposites. Stainless-steel cutlery, knives and serving utensils come in small cartons that weigh a lot; a full pallet can easily exceed the per-pallet weight that groupage networks normally accept, so we always ask for the real weight of every pallet. Bed linen, table linen and towels, by contrast, fill a trailer by volume long before it reaches its weight limit.
If you buy both, load them together: heavy cutlery pallets at the bottom and towards the front, textiles on top and at the back. That uses both payload and volume and lowers the cost per pallet. We can usually combine collections from two or three manufacturers in one day and send the vehicle as a full truck straight to Czechia. Smaller orders go by pallet groupage via a cross-dock near Porto.
Packing tips for cutlery and gift sets
- Knives and items with sharp edges need rigid packaging, or they cut through cartons during handling.
- Printed gift boxes for retail and hospitality show every dent, so we use edge protectors and avoid stacking other goods on top.
- Give us carton and pallet weights separately; it decides whether groupage is possible at all.
East through the Marão tunnel
Trucks from Guimarães do not have to pass through Porto. The A11 leads to Amarante and joins the A4, which runs through the Marão tunnel – at about 5.6 km Portugal’s longest road tunnel, opened in 2016 to replace the winding mountain road over the Serra do Marão. The A4 continues via Vila Real and Bragança to the Spanish border at Quintanilha, where the N-122 leads to Zamora. From there the route runs via Valladolid and Burgos to Irun and across France and Germany to Rozvadov. The alternative is via Porto, the A25 and Vilar Formoso.
Both routes are roughly 2,500–2,600 km. A full truck usually arrives in 5–6 working days, groupage in 7–10 working days. For ADR loads such as cleaning agents or textile chemicals, the carrier must check whether the tunnel may be used; otherwise the truck goes via Porto. France and Germany ban heavy trucks on weekends and public holidays.
Where loading happens
The historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 and is no place for trucks; shop deliveries there go by van. Manufacturers sit in industrial zones and in the outer parishes, often on narrow streets between houses, so we check whether a semi-trailer can reach the site or a smaller rigid truck is needed. Many small firms have no dock, so we send a vehicle with a tail lift. Expect a long lunch break and company holidays in August.
Southbound loads and paperwork
From Czechia we deliver machinery and spare parts for textile and metalworking plants, tools, packaging, glass and porcelain. Paperwork is a CMR plus an invoice or delivery note; there are no customs formalities within the EU. Northern Portugal as a whole – footwear, cork, wine – is covered on our Porto page. Check the price in our freight calculator and book at least 3 working days ahead.

Yes – cutlery uses the payload and textiles the volume. We combine collections from several local manufacturers in one day.
Either the A11 and A4 through the Marão tunnel via Bragança and Zamora, or via Porto and Vilar Formoso; both are about 2,500–2,600 km.
Not always. Many manufacturers are on narrow streets without a dock, so we check access and may send a smaller vehicle with a tail lift.
