Freight forwarding Modena – transport to and from the Czech Republic
Road freight from Modena to the Czech Republic on the A22 via the Brenner: balsamic vinegar, Lambrusco, Parmigiano, ham, medical devices and knitwear.

Food with a protected name
Modena is one of Italy's best-known food cities. It is the home of balsamic vinegar, both the long-aged traditional vinegar with a protected designation of origin and the more common balsamic vinegar of Modena with a protected geographical indication. The surrounding vineyards produce Lambrusco, a sparkling red, the province lies within the Parmigiano Reggiano production area, and local specialities include Prosciutto di Modena, zampone and cotechino sausages and cherries from Vignola. Each needs a different handling:
- balsamic vinegar: glass bottles on pallets, careful securing, standard curtainsider
- Lambrusco: temperature-controlled in summer, excise documentation checked
- Parmigiano wheels: heavy pieces, temperature-controlled vehicle
- ham and sausages: reefer with temperature records throughout
- Vignola cherries: short late-spring season, chilled and fast
Czech importers of Italian food often buy from several small producers at once – vinegar from one, cheese from another, cured meats from a third. We then plan a single reefer with several pick-ups in the province, and if needed in neighbouring Reggio Emilia and Parma, so the goods travel to the Czech Republic as one consignment. Mixed chilled and ambient goods can share a trailer with a partition and two temperature zones.
Where the Brenner motorway begins
Just north of Modena the A22 branches off Italy's main A1 motorway and runs roughly 315 km to the Austrian border at the Brenner Pass. A truck leaving Modena is on it within minutes, passing Mantua, Verona, Trento and Bolzano, then continuing via Innsbruck, Kufstein and Munich to the Waidhaus – Rozvadov border. For Moravia the route goes via the A1 and A13 to Padua, then Venice, Tarvisio and Vienna.
- Prague: roughly 840 km; a full truck with one driver usually unloads on the second working day.
- Brno: roughly 860 km.
- Pallet groupage: usually three to five working days.
Italy bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays, public holidays and some summer Saturdays, Austria has weekend and night restrictions plus block clearance near Kufstein on busy days, and Germany a Sunday ban. Italian tolls are paid by distance at toll plazas.
Medical devices, knitwear, cars and tiles
Mirandola in the north of the province is the centre of one of Europe's largest biomedical districts, making disposable medical devices, dialysis and transfusion sets and equipment. These need clean, dry vehicles, intact packaging and sometimes temperature control. Nearby Carpi is known for knitwear and clothing, shipped in cartons on pallets or on hangers in specialist trucks. The Modena area is also part of Italy's motor valley, building sports cars, engines and racing equipment, with many suppliers of machined parts and hydraulics. The south of the province belongs to the Sassuolo ceramic tile district – more on that on our Bologna page. Tiles are heavy and usually travel as full loads planned around the weight limit.
Exports and booking tips
Czech automotive and engineering parts, glass and packaging, paper, plastics and food-industry raw materials go to Modena. Food warehouses work with fixed time slots and will not unload without a confirmed booking, so we need the exact address, opening hours, dock information and pallet count, size and weight in advance. The historic centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL); warehouses are outside along the motorways and ring road.
Single pallets of vinegar or wine are best sent by pallet transport; chilled goods travel direct without transhipment. Italy is in the EU, so a CMR note and an invoice or delivery note suffice, plus temperature records for chilled food and an excise check for wine. Get a quote in the calculator.
