Limestone country on the Oder

Opole Silesia sits on limestone and marl, and that defines its freight. According to the Polish Geological Institute, deposits in the Opole voivodeship supply roughly a quarter of Poland's raw material for cement. Quarries and cement works lie right by the city on the right bank of the Oder and further east near Strzelce Opolskie and Tarnów Opolski, where lime is also burned.

Czechia has its own cement plants, but for building sites in northern Moravia and Czech Silesia, Opole is no further away than a domestic supplier. Typical loads:

  • bulk cement and lime in pneumatic tankers;
  • bagged cement, dry mortars and renders on pallets;
  • limestone, aggregates and hydrated lime for industry and farming;
  • precast concrete elements on flatbeds.

Chemicals and a river port

About 40 km south-east, Kędzierzyn-Koźle is one of the centres of Polish chemicals, producing nitrogen fertilisers, oxo alcohols and plasticisers. The Gliwice Canal joins the Oder there, and the river port handles bulk cargo moving by barge. Granulated fertiliser and liquid chemicals in tankers travel from the plants to Czechia; the latter are usually dangerous goods and go only with a carrier equipped for ADR transport.

Farmland and bilingual villages

The region has some of the most fertile soils in Poland, growing wheat, rapeseed and sugar beet, with mills, oil presses and sugar factories to match – so grain, flour, rapeseed oil and sugar also travel south. Opole Silesia is also the main centre of Poland's German minority: many villages around the city have bilingual Polish-German names, and dispatch staff often speak German.

Building materials are heavy for their size, so a trailer is full by weight long before it is full by volume. Single pallets of renders can go by pallet transport, but building sites usually take a full truck.

Across the border: motorway or via Krnov

Opole is the closest Polish region to Moravia. The shortest line from the Krnov area crosses at Krnov – Pietrowice and follows Polish road 38 via Głubczyce towards Opole or straight to Kędzierzyn-Koźle; from Jeseník the road runs via Mikulovice and Głuchołazy to Nysa. Both are ordinary roads through villages, so heavy trucks from Ostrava usually take the smoother motorway route via Bohumín – Gorzyczki, the A1 to Gliwice and the A4 west, about 160 km in total. Olomouc is about 160–200 km away depending on the crossing, Brno around 260 km, Prague about 330–400 km via Náchod and Kłodzko or via Wrocław. All are one-day transports.

The A4 bypasses Opole to the south and is electronically tolled between Wrocław and Gliwice. Polish bans for trucks over 12 t apply on public holidays and on summer weekends.

Loading at a cement or lime works

For bulk cement, tell us the cement type and confirm your silo connection. Works load in turn, often in booked slots, so we need the order number. Drivers need protective equipment and must follow site safety rules. For food, confirm the previous load of the tanker or trailer. No customs apply: CMR and invoice or delivery note, plus ADR documents for chemicals. Prices come from the calculator.
