A short lane through the Mühlviertel

Prague to Linz is roughly 250 km by road. Trucks take the D3 motorway and road I/3 via Tábor and České Budějovice to the Dolní Dvořiště – Wullowitz border crossing, then the S10 expressway past Freistadt and the A7 into Linz. From Brno there are two options of about 330 km each: via Jihlava and České Budějovice, or via Mikulov, Vienna and the A1. A full truck loaded in Linz in the morning usually unloads in Prague or South Bohemia the same day and in Brno by the next working morning.

The stretch between the border and Freistadt is an ordinary road climbing through hilly country. From November to mid-April Austria requires trucks over 3.5 t to run winter tyres on the drive axle and carry snow chains. Austria's weekend ban for trucks over 7.5 t (Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00) and distance-based motorway toll also apply; see our page on transport to Austria.

Steel, chemicals and engines

Upper Austria is the country's most industrial province, and Linz is its centre. One of Central Europe's largest steelworks sits on the Danube producing flat steel, next to a large chemical site, with engineering and metalworking plants all around. Typical imports we organise into the Czech Republic:

  • steel coils, sheets, strip and semi-finished steel for stamping plants and fabricators,
  • fertilisers, melamine, plastic granulate and other chemicals, partly dangerous goods,
  • engines, gearboxes, bearings and truck and tractor parts from the industrial area around Steyr, about 40 km south,
  • machinery and production lines, often heavy or oversized,
  • granite from the Mühlviertel quarries and timber.

Going south, Czech suppliers send metal parts and castings for local engineering, building materials, glass, wood products, food and beer.

Port, river and rail

Linz has a large inland port on the Danube with a container terminal and heavy-lift cranes; a second container terminal lies about 20 km downstream near Enns. Machinery arriving by river and containers railed in from North Sea or Adriatic ports can be trucked from there to your site. Linz is also a rail hub, with a direct line via Summerau to České Budějovice. For port collections we need the container or shipment number and confirmation that the goods are released.

Loading at the mills and industrial sites

  • Most large plants work with booked time slots and a reference number.
  • Drivers need safety boots and a high-visibility vest, often a helmet and goggles too.
  • Load securing is inspected, especially for steel.
  • Waiting times can be long, so we plan a buffer in the driver's schedule.

Ask your supplier for the exact gate address, loading reference, weight and dimensions, and whether loading is by crane or forklift. Smaller workshops often load from the side, in which case we book a vehicle with a tail lift or sliding curtains.

Choosing the service

Because the distance is short, small consignments make sense too: a few pallets go by pallet groupage in 1–3 working days, steel or fertiliser fills a direct full truck, and an urgent part goes by van within hours. Paperwork is a CMR consignment note plus invoice or delivery note, with ADR documents for dangerous goods. Get an instant estimate in the calculator.
