Freight forwarding Vienna – transport to and from the Czech Republic
Road freight between Vienna and the Czech Republic: route via Mikulov, Austrian weekend bans, the truck emission sticker and goods imported from Vienna.
The shortest international lane from Czechia
Few cross-border lanes are as compact as Vienna to the Czech Republic. The usual route runs from Prague on the D1 to Brno, continues on the D52 and road I/52 to the Mikulov – Drasenhofen border crossing and then follows the A5 motorway through the Weinviertel wine region to the northern edge of Vienna. Shipments for western Bohemia often go via Znojmo and the Hatě – Kleinhaugsdorf crossing instead. A truck loaded in Vienna in the morning can normally unload in Brno around midday and in Prague the same afternoon.
Austrian rules that shape the schedule
- Trucks over 7.5 t may not drive from Saturday 15:00 until Sunday 22:00 or on public holidays.
- Between 22:00 and 5:00 only certified low-noise trucks may run, with a lower speed limit on motorways.
- Motorways and expressways charge a distance-based electronic toll for vehicles over 3.5 t.
- Vienna and parts of Lower Austria operate an environmental zone for goods vehicles; trucks need an emission class sticker and older vehicles are excluded.
We only book carriers whose vehicles meet these requirements, and we time Friday collections so the truck has cleared Austria before the weekend ban begins.
What we bring from Vienna into the Czech Republic
South of the city along the A2 motorway and around the airport at Schwechat lies a dense belt of industrial estates and distribution warehouses. Typical import loads to Czech customers include machinery and spare parts, electrical components, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, refinery and chemical products from the Schwechat area (some of them as dangerous goods under ADR), Lower Austrian food and drinks, and Weinviertel wine. Many central European distribution centres are also located around Vienna, so a single collection may cover stock for the whole region.
Southbound, Czech suppliers send building materials, glass, furniture, automotive parts, metal products and food for retail and catering. As both countries are in the EU, there are no customs formalities.
Port, rail and air cargo
Vienna has a Danube port at Freudenau with a container terminal served by river barges and by block trains from North Sea and Adriatic seaports. Another intermodal terminal operates in Inzersdorf in the south of the city. A container collected in Vienna may therefore have come from overseas; for these pick-ups we need the container number and the terminal release. Air cargo from Vienna airport is usually forwarded by van or a small truck.
Choosing the right service
For a few pallets, pallet transport in groupage is usually the most economical option and takes one to three working days. A full trailer suits construction materials, beverages or a complete production batch. Urgent parts travel by express van, which is not affected by the heavy-truck weekend ban. Food, wine in summer and pharmaceuticals travel in temperature-controlled trailers with a temperature log.
Delivery tips for Vienna
Inner Vienna has narrow one-way streets and pedestrian zones that can only be supplied in the early morning, so city-centre shops and restaurants are better served with a smaller vehicle. Warehouses in the southern industrial zones have loading docks but strict booking slots. Please confirm the exact address, opening hours, dock or side loading, pallet count and dimensions and total weight; without a dock we book a truck with a tail lift. The paperwork is a CMR consignment note plus an invoice or delivery note. You can check the price in the calculator; our dispatch team usually replies within 30 minutes on working days.
