A province where three countries meet

Klagenfurt lies at the eastern end of Lake Wörthersee, about 40 km from Villach, where three motorways converge: the A2 from Vienna and Graz, the A10 Tauern motorway from Salzburg, and the A11, which runs through the Karawanken tunnel into Slovenia. Beyond Villach the Italian border at Tarvisio leads on to Udine and the Adriatic ports. Ljubljana is only about 90 km from Klagenfurt. For a forwarder this means a Carinthian pickup combines naturally with cargo from Friuli or Slovenia on the same truck.

Southern Carinthia is home to a Slovene-speaking minority, and village signs there are bilingual. We always book collections with the German place name and postcode so the driver finds the right address.

What Carinthian industry ships to the Czech Republic

Electronics is the province's leading industry, with semiconductor production concentrated around Villach. Mechanical engineering provides the most industrial jobs, followed by metalworking, the timber industry and glass and ceramics. Germany, Italy and Slovenia are among the top export markets. Typical loads for Czech customers:

  • semiconductors and electronic components – small, valuable and often urgent;
  • machinery, process equipment and spare parts;
  • sawn timber, glulam, panels and wooden building elements from Carinthian sawmills;
  • metal products and steel structures;
  • refractory and technical materials from the glass and ceramics sector.

Southbound we carry Czech building materials, metal components for engineering firms, packaging, furniture and beverages. Hotels around the lakes are a seasonal customer group, stocking up before summer and refurbishing in the off-season. Lakeside access roads are narrow and busy in July and August, so we schedule furniture and equipment deliveries for spring or autumn and use a smaller truck with a tail lift where a trailer cannot reach the service entrance.

Routes, distances and transit times

  • Prague – Linz – Salzburg – Tauern – Villach: about 600 km, preferred for western Carinthia.
  • Prague – Linz – Pyhrn – Graz – A2: also about 600 km, useful when we combine a Styrian pickup.
  • Brno – Vienna – Graz – A2: about 490 km with no high mountain passes.

From Prague the truck usually arrives the next working day; from Brno an early collection can be delivered the same evening or the following morning. The Tauern tunnels and the Karawanken tunnel carry special tolls on top of Austria's distance-based truck toll. Between 22:00 and 05:00 only low-noise trucks over 7.5 t may drive in Austria, and the weekend ban runs from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00. In heavy snow we avoid the Tauern and route via Graz.

The Koralm railway

Since December 2025 the Koralm line, with a tunnel of about 33 km under the Koralpe range, has been fully operational. The fastest rail link from Klagenfurt to Graz fell from around three hours to roughly 45 minutes, and the line is part of the Baltic–Adriatic corridor. That widens the options for combined transport towards Adriatic ports; cargo arriving in Carinthia by rail can be collected at the terminal and trucked to the Czech Republic.

Collection tips

  • Electronics plants require booked slots, vehicle checks and clean, dry, lockable trailers.
  • For sawn timber and long wooden elements we need the length and loading method; side loading by forklift is common.
  • Small electronics consignments travel best by express van, single pallets by groupage.
  • Within the EU a CMR note and an invoice or delivery note are enough.
