Freight forwarding Stockholm – transport to/from the Czech Republic
Road freight between Stockholm and the Czech Republic across the Baltic: ferries via Rostock or Świnoujście, Swedish paper, timber, steel and winter driving.

What Stockholm and Mälardalen supply
The capital region is more than offices and tech companies. The Mälaren valley and the neighbouring counties have a long tradition of mining and metallurgy, special steels, electrical engineering, robotics, truck and engine manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals and biotech, while paper, pulp and timber flow in from the rest of Sweden. Typical imports to the Czech Republic and Slovakia are:
- paper, board and packaging materials,
- sawn timber, wood panels and wood products,
- special steels, tubes, sheet and tools,
- spare parts for mining, construction and commercial vehicles,
- electrical and telecom equipment,
- pharmaceuticals, medical devices, furniture and interior design.
Czech exporters ship car parts, machinery, glass, food, beer and building materials to Sweden. Trucks delivering to Stockholm look for return loads, so planning both directions together pays off.
Crossing the Baltic
Prague to Stockholm is roughly 1,200 km by road plus a ferry, depending on the option. The most common route runs on the D8 via Krásný Les/Breitenau, Dresden and Berlin to Rostock, then by ferry to Trelleborg and on via Helsingborg along the E4 past Jönköping and Norrköping. Alternatives are Travemünde to Trelleborg or Malmö for loads combined with Hamburg or northern Germany, Świnoujście to Ystad for shipments from Moravia via Poland, and the land route over Fehmarn and the Øresund Bridge when ferries are full. A full truck normally takes three working days, sometimes one more depending on sailings. We book ferry space in advance, as summer and pre-Christmas sailings fill up, and time on board counts as the driver's rest.
Pickup locations around the city
Large warehouses and distribution centres line the E4, south towards Södertälje and north towards Arlanda, Sweden's largest cargo airport. South of the city near Nynäshamn, Norvik port handles containers and ro-ro traffic. Driving into central Stockholm incurs the congestion tax and heavy vehicles must meet environmental zone rules, so deliveries to shops and offices in the centre go by smaller vehicle.
Sweden allows longer and heavier vehicle combinations than Germany or the Czech Republic. If your supplier usually loads Swedish long combinations, remind them that the shipment must fit a standard truck of up to 40 t gross weight for the journey south.
Winter on the route
From December to March, expect snow, ice and short daylight in Sweden. In winter conditions heavy vehicles must have winter tyres on the drive axles, and the carriers we use on this route are equipped for it. Winter can still add half a day to a day to the transit, so we plan delivery dates with a buffer. Sweden has no general weekend truck ban, but on the German leg trucks may not drive on Sundays and public holidays.
Shipment options and paperwork
Paper reels, timber bundles or steel tubes usually fill a whole truck and often need side or top loading – a curtainsider allows this, but we need to know in advance. Paper is sensitive to moisture and pressure damage: reels usually travel standing on end, on anti-slip mats, in a dry and clean trailer without sharp edges, while timber and steel need careful strapping and enough lashing points. We pass these requirements to the carrier in advance so the right vehicle turns up. Single pallets are best sent by pallet groupage, taking roughly 5–7 working days. Pharmaceuticals and food travel in a reefer with temperature recording. Sweden is in the EU, so a CMR note plus invoice or delivery note is enough, with no customs formalities. More about the whole country is on our Sweden transport page, and goods from the west coast are covered under freight forwarding Gothenburg.
