Wolfsburg – the city and its industry

A supplier lane rather than a market

Most freight between the Czech Republic and Wolfsburg is supply-chain traffic. Czech suppliers deliver castings, stampings, plastic mouldings, cable harnesses, glass and electronics, and the city's car plant, one of the largest in the world, calls them off according to production schedules. The reverse flow carries:

  • parts and modules for Czech assembly and supplier plants,
  • press tools, moulds and fixtures for new production start-ups,
  • dismantled equipment and line sections when production moves,
  • steel coils and sheet from the steelworks in nearby Salzgitter,
  • empty returnable packaging for the next deliveries.

The city itself was founded in 1938 to house workers of the new car plant on the Mittelland Canal and took the name Wolfsburg, after its castle, in 1945. Braunschweig, with its research institutes, and Salzgitter, home to steelmaking and engine production, complete an industrial triangle.

Route and timing

From Prague it is about 430 km: D8 to Dresden, A4 and A14 via Leipzig and Halle to Magdeburg, A2 westwards and finally the A39 north into Wolfsburg. A single driver covers it in one working day, so a morning departure from Bohemia means an evening or early next-morning delivery. From Brno, about 630 km, plan for next-day arrival. The A2 between Berlin and Hanover is one of Germany's busiest transit motorways, and accidents there regularly cause long tailbacks.

Three service levels for automotive freight

Regular daily or weekly shuttles run as a full truckload with fixed loading times and a carrier familiar with large-plant gate procedures. Smaller, flexible volumes go by pallet groupage in two to three working days. When a line is about to stop, we organise an emergency run as express transport: a van leaves as soon as the order is confirmed and drives straight to the plant gate without transshipment, roughly six hours from Prague.

Tooling and equipment moves

New model launches and production transfers send press tools, plastic moulds and measuring fixtures between Wolfsburg and Czech plants. A single tool can weigh several tonnes and be worth far more than the truck carrying it. Such loads need a trailer with a solid floor and enough lashing points, crane or heavy-forklift loading, and careful securing with chains or straps. Keep in mind that a carrier's liability under the CMR convention is capped by weight, not by value, so cargo insurance is advisable for expensive tooling.

At the gate

Entering a major plant requires preparation. The driver needs an order or delivery-note number, a booked time slot and often a pre-registered licence plate. Goods must carry labels to the customer's specification, usually the VDA standard, and travel in the prescribed packaging, typically plastic small-load carriers or mesh boxes. Missing paperwork means waiting time, which quickly becomes expensive, so please forward every instruction you have from the consignee with your order. Tell us in advance how much empty packaging is waiting, and we will plan it as a return load.

Calendar: holidays and plant shutdowns

Lower Saxony adds Reformation Day on 31 October to the national holidays. On those days and on Sundays, trucks over 7.5 t may not drive; toll applies above 3.5 t. More important for planning is the production calendar: car plants usually close for a collective holiday in summer and between Christmas and New Year, and order larger quantities before and after. Ask your customer for the dates early. Our transport to Germany page has more on the market; rates are in the calculator.
